Voor de vaste Kamercommissie voor Binnenlandse Zaken schreven Josje den Ridder (SCP) en ik een factsheet over vertrouwen in de politiek. Een enorme literatuur samengevat, met focus op NL.

I intend to keep this dataset up to date with new elections in these 15 countries (e.g. recent elections in NO and upcoming elections in NL).

If anyone wants to contribute by adding other countries or elections, or has any questions about the data, let me know!

The aim of the paper was to compare urban-rural divides in election outcomes between countries and over time. This resulted in the 'Urban-rural Electoral Divides' dataset, with election outcomes disaggregated at municipality/constituency levels in 15 countries, covering 5 decades.

If it helps anyone sleep tonight, we don't find these percentages in our own data across Europe (May-June 2025). Largest shares of 'ambivalents' are found in Poland (30%) and Spain (34%), but overall a majority supports democracy while rejecting autocracy.

New study out today—“Is the Urban-Rural Divide Affectively Polarised?“ finds a substantial political cleavage between urban and rural populations in multiple European countries. Place-based affective polarization is associated with voting along liberal vs nationalist divide #PoliticalScience

In the paper we further show how these associations have changed over time, after urban-rural divides became strongly politicized, and we discuss how it still indirectly benefits the radical right through other attitudes.

We hope it paves the way for more comparative studies on PBR and voting (4/4)

Place-based resentment thus does not form a unique explanation for radical right support in the Netherlands. Instead, it is positively related to support for the agrarian-populist BBB, and negatively related to support for the two largest left-wing progressive parties (PvdA/GL and D66). (3/4)
twanhuijsmans.bsky.social
Place-based resentment is often used to explain support for populist radical right parties in rural areas, but there's no direct evidence from multiparty systems.

We find that PBR is positively related to PRR support , but, importantly, no longer once other attitudes were taken into account. (2/4)

New publication with Wouter van der Brug in Electoral Studies!

What is the role of place-based resentment for voting behavior in multiparty systems?

We took data from the Dutch parliamentary elections in '17, '21 and '23 to find out.
