Electric bicycles, and shared electric bicycles in particular, are a revolutionary transportation technology. Forward-looking cities should be building out the infrastructure necessary to make cycling safe and convenient for everyone who wants to do it.

One-third of Angelenos do not drive
Walking back the "car-free" games promise is unconscionable in a city where the people who don't drive are also the most vulnerable users of our streets

We need a bigger national spotlight on this building raid, fam. Agents dropped from helicopters onto the roof. Citizens and non-citizens alike were dragged from their homes in the night. People who weren't kidnapped during the raid had their belongings seized after the fact. This is madness.

"Jones, 27, is among the residents left at 7500 S. South Shore Drive who are trying to piece together what remains after an early morning, high-powered federal immigration raid led to the arrests of dozens of their neighbors at their South Shore apartment building."
Massive immigration raid on Chicago apartment building leaves residents reeling: 'I feel defeated'
The Department of Homeland Security said federal agents with Border Patrol, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives arrested 37 people in the raid.

The military cares about climate change because they understand it's setting the ground for more conflicts, and because their bases are underwater. Seems like having your bases underwater might affect military readiness.

Feels like ICE and the state of Iowa are going to make sure this man is ruined even if he is released. From a Cedar Rapids Gazette Article: www.thegazette.com/state-govern...
"Our office has received information that you no longer possess legal presence in the United States, therefore you (are) not able to hold a license issued by the lowa Board of Educational Examiners," Michael Cavin, the board's executive director, wrote in a letter addressed to Roberts. "The license issued by the Board of Educational Examiners is no longer valid and your authority to serve as superintendent is revoked."

ICE also claims Roberts fled when first contacted by officers Friday, and when he was apprehended was in possession of a loaded handgun, $3,000 in cash and a fixed blade hunting knife.

Roberts was taken to the Woodbury County Jail in northwest lowa late Friday afternoon, according to jail and ICE records, the Associated Press reported.

The Des Moines Public School Board scheduled a special session for Monday, during which it planned to place Roberts on unpaid administrative leave, which is required by law given the state board's action to revoke Roberts' license. The board on Saturday put Roberts on leave.

The board on Monday will consider "new information" regarding Roberts' arrest, according to a district press release.

"New information and confirmed facts will continue to inform our decisions as we develop a path forward," Des Moines Public Schools Board Chair Jackie Norris said in the press release. "Two things can be true at the same time - Dr. Roberts was an effective and well-respected leader and there are serious questions related to his citizenship and ability to legally perform his duties as superintendent."

It is actually peak absurdity that we still have people arguing that voters should bend to the positions of their political representatives instead of the other way around.

Exactly! You're landlord put in quartz countertops and thick laminate flooring because they are durable. The developer put in the minimum amount of outlets required by code because they are cheap!

I always think "luxury"and "luxe" have the connotation "superficially flashy but shoddily made" these days.

If you're one of those people who ascribe some of the precipitous decline in violence in the late twentieth century to "we stopped lead poisoning people" - which I am - you do have to be concerned that now we've made lead poisoning cheap and addictive.

The most affordable apartments in the many US cities are one- and two-bedroom units in divided up old mansions.
resnikoff.bsky.social
Whenever people talk about "luxury housing," I remember there are literal mansions in Hartford, CT that are now selling for less than it costs to buy a starter home in Silicon Valley. If we judge luxury by market value, there is no housing that is intrinsically, permanently "luxury housing."
urbanistben.bsky.social
Especially in Los Angeles, where people complain new buildings are unaffordable, and similar buildings are going up for half the price across the country. The price is dictated by local policies meant to drive housing prices ever higher and higher.
urbanistben.bsky.social
One of the things I still can't wrap my mind around is people who are not urbanists inability to recognize "luxury" is purely a marketing term applied to new housing to denote its newness.

There is a subtle but very important difference between conservationists and environmentalists.
struthious.bsky.social
Our so-called environmental activists have failed us.
Phot of excerpt from Why Nothing Works by Marc Dunkelman with text: “ The hit parade of potentially worthwhile clean energy projects undermined explicitly or implicitly by the legacy of progressivism's Jeffersonian impulse is too long to list in full. But the most blatant examples make clear that the problem isn't just climate denialism. Progressives mo-bilized, for example, to fight a developer's plan to build a 690-megawatt solar plant northeast of Las Vegas, with the detractors claiming the new facility would imperil a desert tortoise habitat. The Audubon Society sued to block wind farms in California. The Sunrise Movement, a youth-oriented project whose tagline is "We are the climate revolution," mobilized to fight solar projects in Amherst, Massachusetts, for fear that new paneling might lead to deforestation.* And the local chapter of the Sierra Club would play a crucial role in the fight against NECEC in Maine.”
