CARNEY: "We know that nostalgia is not a strategy. We can't rebuild the world as it was. But we can build something better. ... Canada is a determined and ambitious nation that is rising to the challenge of these ages."

this is *not* my favourite poem, for once, but it's still a good one (and a favourite poet, and my favourite blue heron).

A lovely German phrase for describing a place in the middle of nowhere is wo sich Fuchs und Hase gute Nacht sagen. It means “where the fox and hare say goodnight.”

The greatest thing, he said, was presence
To be yourself in your own time, to stand up
That poetry was precision, raw precision
Truth and compassion: genius

it's not a digit, it's a number, I don't know how words work, this is why I got a 70.3

Anyhoo joke's on me, recipient of a single digit representing the average of three scores assigned by an unknown number of assessors who rejected my grant application, indeed I see myself as a creature driven and derided by vanityyyyyyy

When time was up I'd erase the number and say, "Hope you all had fun at Araby!" And slowly they would figure it out, the number was meaningless, part of growing up is realizing you've misunderstood, or there's nothing there to understand.

I used to have a lot of fun teaching James Joyce's "Araby" by writing some opaque talking points and a random number on the board & soliciting a volunteer to lead discussion, then periodically increasing or decreasing the number while the class desperately tried to figure out why, what it meant.
