If you are a Jewish health professional, please consider signing this letter calling for an end to the genocide in Gaza.

As we begin the days of awe, as we welcome in a new year, now is the time. We must do better. We cannot remain silent.

Whether they're blaming vaccines and Tylenol, or selling dubious "remedies," what they're really doing is promoting the perception that families (and especially mothers) can prevent and treat Autism. And thus also the perception that people with Autism and their families don't need social support.

The Republican reaction to Kirk’s murder has been a campaign of state repression that ends with Trumpist toadies deciding what Americans are allowed to think, do and say. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...
What happened to Jimmy Kimmel is not about one comedian who said something he should not have said. The Trump administration and its enforcers want to control your speech, your behavior, even your public expressions of mourning. You are not allowed to criticize the president’s associates. You do not even retain the right to remain silent; you must make public expressions of emotions demanded by the administration and its allies or incur its disfavor, which can threaten your livelihood. This is the road to totalitarianism, and it does not end with one man losing his television show.

Graph showing a strong negative correlation between GDP per capita and unequal gender role norms.

While economists have extensively studied gender norms affecting women, masculinity norms – the informal rules that guide and constrain the behaviours of boys and men – remain underexplored. This column reviews how such norms can shape economic outcomes in labour markets, health, education, households, and politics. Drawing on new survey data from 87,000 individuals across 70 countries, the authors show that adherence to masculinity norms strongly predicts men's labour supply, risk-taking, health behaviours, and support for authoritarian leadership.

📢New working paper: "Masculinity Norms and Their Economic Consequences" w/ @paulinegrosjean.bsky.social Ieda [email protected].

We review the literature on how masculinity norms - the informal rules guiding men's behavior - shape economic outcomes in health, labor markets & politics. 🧵

I’m sorry for your loss. Thank you for drawing attention to the issue.

In economics, we are only just starting to acknowledge masculinity norms and their consequences for behavior and outcomes, including help seeking and suicide.

Sara Hernandez is coming to Unibo next week. Her paper title:

"Guns N’ Roses: The Impact of Female Employment Opportunities on Violence in Colombia"

Took me a while. had to read the abstract to get it...

But I love it. 10 out of 10.

"Women are PIs on 58% of the canceled grants, although they are PIs on only 34% of all active NSF grants.

Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."

Another scoop from Jeff Mervis (@policyhound.bsky.social): NSF's ~1400 grant terminations have disproportionately affected PIs from groups underrepresented in science: women, racial & ethnic minorities, & those with disabilities. 1/3

Australia's major parties would rather kill off our 3rd biggest export market for a dog whistle policy than to limit negative gearing or invest in public housing

Utterly moronic decision-making by BOTH duopoly parties - sacrificing the hugely important education sector when it should be thriving, all because they’re incapable of tough decisions on real estate investment rorts.
Cutting students is not the solution to housing.

Worst two-day stock market crashes in the U.S. by percentage loss:

1. 1929 (the Great Depression)

2. 1987 (Black Monday)

3. 2008 (the Great Recession)

4. YESTERDAY AND TODAY

And while this happened, the man responsible for it was golfing and dining with enemies of America.

let’s be real, there’s no rampant antisemitism on campuses.

What there is plenty of is weaponised victimhood and the Fascist Team Trump take advantage of it for their gain

I am Jewish.

I have spent literally my entire life on university campuses.

I was the child of two Jewish professors.

Since kindergarten I have spent exactly one year as neither a student nor a professor.

I have, on occasion, experienced antisemitism. But never on a university campus.
