Have you heard of ‘informal inference’? it’s an approach to teaching #statistics that can support students in developing their statistical reasoning skills. Many students don’t encounter inference until A-level, but in fact they can be introduced to these ideas from a very young age.

Showing mathematical reasoning is more than a formality, or a speed bump to the correct answer. It’s how students make sense of problems, communicate ideas, and prove their reasoning so that others can learn from them. ⭐

Just a reminder to check for your name in this list of books that OpenAI trained from. If your name is there, they probably owe you several thousand dollars.

OpenAI cried that if everyone eligible author files, the company will go bankrupt, so I'm alerting every author I have ever spoken to.

I hope September has been gentle so far. I recently learnt that not having dreams is a sign of chronic stress, and the past couple of weeks I’ve been having dreams for the first time in ages. It’s weird for September to start and not to be in education, but… I am dreaming now so there’s that ❤️

This They Might Be Giants TONIGHT SHOW performance of "Birdhouse In Your Soul" from 1990 remains firmly lodged in my noggin thanks to the Tonight Show Band's full commitment and Doc Severinsen's incredible trumpeting... It took an already great song and made it transcendent.

Or a special interest thing to do. I memorise stats, just because they’re sports related doesn’t make it any less dorky!

School refusal is also an outdated term, EBSA is better, and a good article here on why the language matters and how our trauma based response options open up:

I mean it’s the mail… 🤣 probably mentioned liking the dictionary at 11.
Also, that many A and A* a-levels… probably did know better than some of her teachers?
Kids want to be in school, those who school refuse are doing it because they don’t feel safe, wanted, or supported. Usually neurodivergent.

Results days for me are feeling more emotional and final this year than any other!
These days feel high stakes, but they are a culmination of 11 or 13 years of education *and life* and the variables are such that those who might try to hold you accountable should be reminded that you were

Good column this. Ultimately the UK's problems are 'need to spend a bit more money' - big and important questions on what the right mix of public and private that should be, but no, we don't need a 'Meiji Restoration' level of upheaval!
Britain is not a broken society
The country has serious problems but the right’s vision of it has become hysterical

If there were such a thing as an email discussion group aimed at giving #history #teachers and #maths teachers (mainly secondary) somewhere to discuss the history of maths and the maths of history with a view to exploring each subject in the other's lessons...

... who would join it?

This is so powerful, neurodivergent kids carry a heavier emotional burden in mainstream schools.
The students in this report talk a lot about the negative impact of certain interactions with adults in school 😔

The ‘My Emotions in School Inventory (MESI)’ was co-produced with young people with ADHD and/or autism to measure levels of emotional burden (EB – combining frequency of exposure to common upsetting events and intensity of emotional responses to them) in adolescents.

Week 1 of summer hols spent in Cornwall, mostly on the beach. I’m covered in sand. The car is full of sand. The holiday house is full of sand. I step out the shower and still find sand over my legs. The dog whimpers at the sight sand.
The beach has no sand left.
Time to leave Cornwall 🤣
An old pathway headed out to sea, the end is not visible beneath the water.
