A dark possibility occurred to me: What if part of the reason we evolved the reflex to scream, weep, and cry after a severe injury is because it signaled predators to kill and eat immobilized stragglers among ancient humans, thus "weeding out" those who likely wouldn't survive serious injury anyway?

This is part of why, as much as organization and structure are necessary, I am extremely skeptical of power outside of informed, consenting—informed, revocable, and continual consent, that is—relationships. Hierarchy, social stratification, involuntaryism, coercion, class division... all dehumanize.
