Lifelong New Englander, still a journalist at heart. Politics, ethics, sports, travel.
Naturally, the type of people who would invest the time and effort into attending a Trump rally (other than those assigned to do so) laugh and applaud this garbage.
Trump: I did something no other President ever done. I took cognitive tests. By the way, not easy…The first question is like what is this and they show a lion, giraffe, fish and a hippopotamus. And they say, 'Which is the giraffe?'

@dandrezner.bsky.social's comment gets to the heart of Trumpism: It frees people from feeling they should make amends for past misdeeds and try to do better? Done something morally and/or legally wrong and wound up hurting people? Fuck it. Fuck them. It's sure worked for Trump.
“One of the great virtues to have [in Trumpworld] is that you got caught doing bad things and not giving a fuck… That’s the definition of Donald Trump’s career. He’s been caught over and over again. I think they value that greatly.”

Absolutely a great Christmas movie. I've been looking for cinematic antidotes to the madness of the past week. Here's a good one. Extra points for the bowling scene, shot in my hometown of Wakefield, MA.
By the way, a great Christmas movie.

My mind keeps shifting from appreciation for Rob Reiner’s incredible run of brilliant films to the horrible reality of his and his wife’s death. By all accounts, he was an exceptional person as well as a great artist. For him to die this way is confoundingly unjust.

Trump is a convicted and adjudicated criminal who is using the most powerful office in the world to financially benefit himself, his family and his corrupt business associates. It’s maddening that people support this abomination of a human being.
This shit is just cartoonishly corrupt.

Which is it?

Trump knows he’s racist and is no longer attempting to disguise it.

Trump doesn’t recognize that it’s racist to call overwhelmingly Black nations like Somalia “shit-hole countries” while pleading for immigrants from overwhelmingly white nations like Sweden, Norway and Denmark.
I’ll never forget hearing Donald Trump’s racist “shithole countries” comment in a 2018 Oval Office meeting about immigration.

Tom Cotton and David Perdue claimed Trump didn’t say it and accused me of lying.

The truth comes out.
TRUMP: “I said why is it we only take people from shithole countries? Why can't we have some people from Norway, Sweden, Denmark… But we always take people from Somalia— places that are filthy, dirty, disgusting.”

Such a mystery what he means when he says this stuff, isn’t it?

Great piece from @peteabeglobe.bsky.social. Literally reading it by a hot stove — OK, a gas fireplace — made it all the more enjoyable.

ProPublica reporter @nicolefoy.bsky.social found that more than 170 U.S. citizens had been detained by immigration agents.

“The number became an important, irrefutable fact in the conversation about the immigration crackdown,” our editor-in-chief @sengelberg.bsky.social writes.

1. The destination of the boats’ cargo is most likely Europe, not the U.S.

2. If there are drugs on board, they’re almost certainly cocaine, not fentanyl.

3. Legally, alleged drug traffickers are entitled to due process, not subject to extrajudicial killing, aka murder.
“Saving 25,000 lives” by blowing up a boat relies on the kind of innumeracy that led people to believe that, when Trump talked about deporting 20 million people, he would be targeting only criminals and rapists. lnk.thebulwark.com/3KP4z0z

The ignorance, denialism and just plain stupidly of this administration is incalculable. History will not judge us kindly.
Heartbreaking. The University of Nebraska will terminate its entire Earth science department.

One of the country's most successful and respected geology & climate programs: gone.

When ideologues & politicians are threatened by the very act of studying climate change, I wonder: who of us is next?
It's over.

Despite the fact that the academic council recommended against it, despite the fact that the program brought in more tuition than it cost, and despite the fact that Nebraskans need & deserve this expertise, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences will be cut.
