Salisbury is a terrific find Chris, for I appreciate what I call conflict art esp WW1. A Portrait artist like Orpen yet I cannot readily find if he went to France like Orpen & maybe why I overlooked him. Must find out more.
His Boy Cornwell is a superb painting esp. if you know his story.

Since his arrival in the city he had devoted much study to the dotted Pointillist technique, thereby learning how he might apply it in his own fashion. His use of brushstrokes running in a variety of directions created a self-portrait with a halo-like circle round his head. This painting depicts three people, a man and two women, outdoors engaged in artistic endeavors. The man, with short, graying hair, is dressed in a dark blue shirt, trousers, and appears to be using a painting palette. The older woman wears a red sweater and light green hat, stretched out on an olive-green coat painting at an easel. Standing between them holding paint supplies under her arm is a younger woman staring at us behind sunglasses while wearing a chic white dress. It is hard to imagine a more idyllic vision of a family painting holiday. Dad happy with pipe and brush, mum, a picture of contentment in sensible sun hat and daughter adding a touch of Hollywood glamour. The year was 1937 and the young woman in the white dress is Veronica Burleigh with her mother Averil and father Charles. By this time, all three were professional painters and longstanding exhibitors at the Royal Academy. Veronica was born in 1909 in a house purpose built for art. Her parents had designed 7 Wilbury Crescent in Hove with the family business in mind. After studying at the Slade School of Fine Art, 1927–30, under Henry Tonks, Burleigh exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts (RA), Sussex Women’s Art Club (SWA) and with the Sussex Painters, at Worthing, where the public gallery holds her work. Her famous art includes Little Ballet Dancers, Scene Painters and Calliope. During World War II, she served in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. Burleigh’s work was mainly portraits until 1970, when she moved into the country, living at Henfield, Sussex. For 20 years, she commuted yearly to Rhodesia, where she held 23 one-person shows. The family exhibited 96 times at the Royal Academy – Averil (54), Charles (27) and Veronica (15). Charles died in 1956, at 87, outliving Averil who had a fatal heart attack in 1949, at 66. The glamorous Veronica, a devotee of fast cars and gardening, never married, but, after an adventurous life, returned to Sussex where she passed away in 1998 at 89.

This oil on canvas painting from America’s Gilded Age, depicts a 26-year-old Dora Wheeler Keith (née Lucy Dora Wheeler) seated in profile on an ornate wooden chair looking at us. She is dressed in a long, flowing teal gown with black fur trim. To her right, on a small table, is a large decorated vase of yellow flowers. Her features are delicate, with short dark hair and eyes. Wheeler appears relaxed, with her right hand resting on the arm of the chair and the other gently touching her cheek in a thoughtful pose. There is a sense of grace and poise in her posture. Her mother Candace Wheeler was an author, artist/designer, entrepreneur, and a nationally known expert on decorative textiles and interiors, celebrated for championing women as artists and designers. Her father Thomas Mason Wheeler was a businessman involved with shipping in New York harbor, a "clever progressive man" supportive of his wife and daughter in their artistic aspirations. Dora became American artist William Merritt Chase's first student when he returned from overseas study in Munich, Germany and set up a teaching studio in New York. At the time, few male American artists accepted women as private pupils so this was a milestone moment for both student and teacher. After her course of study, Wheeler joined her mother in launching a successful decorating firm, the Associated Artists, one of the first businesses in the country to be operated entirely by women. For the company, she designed luxurious textiles, and Chase used the embroidered silk tapestry that fills the background in her portrait to reference her occupational interest. Chase's portrait was awarded a gold medal at an international exhibition of contemporary art in Munich in 1883, and later that year was also shown in Paris, France. Eventually, the painting was acquired by Wheeler, who subsequently donated it to the Cleveland Museum of Art.

One of the prettiest light paintings I've seen for a while, but this target photo was taken over Kassel 22/23 October 1943. Bomber Command aircraft created a firestorm and around 10,000 people died on the ground. 43 aircraft were lost and 240 aircrew were killed.
