In the general spirit of Bovino finally leaving Chicago, it is my opinion that @govpritzker.illinois.gov should present a bit of a parting gift in the spirit of Chicago (literally):
Malort: When you need to unfriend someone...in person. Ah, yes, Malort. An American brannvin, the *de facto* city spirit of Chicago, bottled for your stuporific deworming enjoyment (for certain definitions of "enjoy") by Jeppson's since 1934, and available within a roughly 500-mile radius of the Windy City (or at least a corridor stretching from around Milwaukee, Wisconsin down to Louisville, KY). It is also a drink with absolutely NO redeeming qualities whatsoever. It is a wormwood-based liqueur; whereas absinthe is the Green Fairy and its bitterness cloaked in anise and a sugar cube, Malort is the surly troll who is a member of the Unseelie Court ready to throw hands. It is the Champagne of Pain; it is the drink of 108 years of suffering of Chicago Cubs fans, of Chicago White Sox desperately trying to banish the curse of Shoeless Joe and the Black Sox, of longsuffering Blackhawks fans under the nickel-and-dime era of "Dollar" Bill Wirtz. Which is to say: This is some bitter-ass liqueur that is *very* much a Warrior's Drink. (As the old advert copy notes: "After the third shot, you're ours forever". The trick, of course, getting past that FIRST shot.) Malort has such a Reputation (to the point it is used as a hazing ritual by Chicagoans, similar to the sourtoe cocktail of Dawson City, Yukon) that at one point it inspired a whole group of Internet-contributed meme adverts on a theme of "If you are willingly consuming this concoction, you have probably made questionable life choices and/or are about to get into a Fight" including this advert. (Other selections being "Malort: Tonight's the night you fight your dad", "Malort: These pants aren't going to shit themselves", "Malort; Weeding out Chicago's weak since 1934", "Malort: The official drink of 'I'm not getting my security deposit back'", and so on.) Now, as for myself? I actually do willingly drink Malort. The Green Fairy, or specifically the anise, spurns me; I did make it past the third shot :D
