I always enjoy those bits. Yesterday I ended up having to research what people in the 1660s knew about electricity and then back-compatible it into my manuscript and that was actually fun

It’s been too long. I still buy things - I got perils and princesses to play with my kids recently but they’re still a bit young I think

Nice hat!

I’m always tempted to go back and tinker as I go on a detailed draft.

Omg I wish I had the time to be a TTRPG hipster these days:) once upon a time I was like “let me tell you about this cool new game vampire”:) I think the last rpg I played was monsterhearts not long after it’s release. I miss it!

It’s incredible. The movie is making fun of pronouns!

I have been reading a lot of books on revolutions recently for a fiction WIP, pulling elements from lots of them to go into a fictional early-modern revolution. Hence my special interest. Ironically you have been the person I've thought about approaching to concept art it:)

I frequently look at the directorate and think they are at least *rational*, whereas things the Bolsheviks do are often just bizarre.

Things like Lysenkoism, the purging of the Kulaks mid-famine, Nazino island, refusing food in the 1921 famine...there's not even a personal or political benefit

Not mine!

Also, Columbo esque one last thing. I also think there was a real mass popular support for the French revolution, for concepts like levee en masse in a way that the bolsheviks wouldn’t establish really for decades.
January 21, 2026 at 8:36 AM
Also widely underestimated is the Bolsheviks are incompetent and cruel in a way people like the directorate just aren’t? Anyway that’s my 5am thoughts:)

Basically the fundamentals of France are undamaged by the revolution (indeed arguably improved because you kill a load of your worst creditors, destroy terrible governance, abolish mad things like corvee), and after 1788 I don’t think there’s another famine until 1846.

Russia is just much more of a mess. Massive oppressed nationalities like Finland, Ukraine, Poland breaking away on ethnic not political grounds, taking key infrastructure, people. Whites much more credible internal enemy, Russian army much shitter, economy a disaster post ww1

Also so many guns when they all fired together, there was so much smoke and flame it was regularly reported to have spontaneously exploded.

It's so silly, I'll have to put it historical fiction at some point.

Was nicknamed "the Gin palace" because instead of BORING watertight bulkheads, the Brazillians insisted on beautiful furnishings like a liner.

Apparently had lovely glassware and crockery when delivered, but shattered it all with gun concussion when they tested all the big guns together.

Normal battleships have front big gun turrets A-B and rear turrets X-Y.

Agincourt had so many big gun turrets they were named after days of the week, Monday through Sunday.

All the controls were marked in Portuguese, so they crew had to learn the language.
