A birthday shoutout to composer Marco Beltrami.
Known for his scores for SCREAM and other horror films, he has a very wide range, and has worked with Guillermo del Toro, James Mangold, Kathryn Bigelow and others.
Emmy winner and Academy Award nominee Beltrami is 59 today.

NET PLAYHOUSE debuted #OTD in 1966 on the precursor to PBS.

This anthology series brought adaptations of plays and literature to primetime – including BBC productions, pre-MASTERPIECE THEATRE.

It also included foreign films + cultural performances of all sorts and continued after NET became #PBS.

THE FRENCH CONNECTION premiered #OTD in 1971.

It won 5 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Gene Hackman, and Best Director for William Friedkin.

"We operated more like a small independent company than a big studio," Friedkin wrote in his autobiography. #FilmSky

Ha! I'd let mine "set" on the train and comb it out when I got to school. It was, indeed, crispy.

I commuted to NYU on the train from Long Island in those days, which was a bit less cinematic!

And I had the male version of big hair: buzzed sides, long in the back, and a spiky side part, thanks to plenty of mousse, gel, and Stiff Stuff. Good times.

A nearly 2 minute oner around the Statue of Liberty, then following a Staten Island ferry passing by. Before a character is introduced, we get the sense of a weekday morning for a low level employee taking public transit to work.

Even with drones, they would CGI this today and it would feel off.

The opening titles of WORKING GIRL (1988) still give me goosebumps 37 years later.

Mike Nichols' Staten Island Cinderella story is on TCM tonight at 12:45am ET, so grab a disco nap and watch.

I wish I could tell you it was on a subscription or ad-supported streamer, but no luck! VOD only right now.

But it should be on Watch TCM tomorrow if you have access to that.

It's very dark and very funny. See it in the theater if you have a chance. If you don't, it's well worth a VOD rental.
