When we visited a decade ago, my son said, “We have to go see the bell!” We had a storybook about it and it had been his favorite that I read aloud to him when he was young.

I kept thinking about this while I was in the Eco Exoerience pavilion at the fair. This is the only framing by which the Frey campaign can seem to be some kind of an eco exoerience.

Just imagine what might happen if the people with the manic hatred to create and staff stupid things like this put that energy toward fixing something or making something that helped people. But this energy they have can apparently only be for waste products.

How about the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, at Whitefish Point. Michigan, where you can stand beside the ship’s bell retrieved from the severed hulk of the Edmund Fitzgerald, lying at the bottom about 20 miles offshore. My son insisted we go on our first trip through the UP.

On 2 July 1942 82 children from Lidice, a small village in what was then Czechoslovakia, were handed over to the Gestapo in Łódź Poland. Theywere then transported to the extermination camp at Chełmno 70km away, where they were gassed to death. This sculpture by Marie Uchytilová commemorates them.

Just after the anthem, a guy with a group from an outer burb says “60% of the team were kneeling during the anthem,” which starts a buzz among their group. In fact, only two kneeled. I was thinking, “Isn’t it good they can just do this?” Behind me I hear, “I thought we were done with that crap.”

The lack of self-awareness among the punditry never ceases to amaze, getting breathless that “democracy is on the line” one minute and then criticizing the people actually fighting for it in the next because you don’t like the flag they brought to the protest.
