I really believe that huge majorities of Americans don’t want masked soldiers shooting priests in the street. They don’t want naked children ripped out out of their apartments in the middle of the night and handcuffed. We win by making sure these stories get told.

I continue to think conditions and safety in the city would naturally improve if the mayor, and police officers, had to spent parts of every day walking around where people are, instead of hiding in city offices and cars.

Continues to be striking how, since Frey erected the greenway fence to Lake/Nicollet, the crowd has returned en masse to 2900 block of Blaisdell. Frey bleats “you can’t have encampments by home & businesses“ but that’s exactly where he’s pushed these folks. Meanwhile 50 housing vouchers go unfunded.

This is true for students too. Yes there are many factors impacting student reading, but working 30+ hours a week to be able to afford college is definitely one of them.

I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections

As with every other major shift in American life this decade, 2020 marked a major turning point here. The supposed excesses of brief calls for racial justice were deemed so intolerable-due largely, I would argue, to the political and media classes spending three years shrieking about crime and explicitly tying it to said calls for racial justice-that they boomeranged into people essentially apologizing for saying George Floyd's murder was bad, and promising a newfound commitment to being more racist.

Wow. I remember looking at the pages of the Book of Kells on display at Trinity College in Dublin and thinking of all the work and the hard miles traveled (including over water) it had required to get the makings for each of those beautiful inks on the pages. Very cool that you and she do that.
