Starfleet Academy Episode 3 commentary: by Roddenberry, that was fun.

A shocking number of the haiku I've written lately involve cold, snow, and things that result from cold and snow.

I have however managed to find the time to catch the first 2 episodes of Starfleet Academy. It's both fun and very true to the spirit of Trek so far. As a pale-skinned male in his 50s, I'm not sure what the angry fuss is all about in certain quarters. Relax and enjoy the show or just don't watch it.

Busy start to the year in a lot of ways. Getting stuff done on all fronts, but it never feels like enough.

There’s a GoFundMe for Jonathan Ross’s legal expenses for murdering Renee Good.

This violates GoFundMe’s Terms of Service. Everyone must report it.

A thread on how to do that 🧵

Not so hot take for a 50+ year-old movie: Soylent Green is a boring, mediocre film not helped by Charlton Hesten's overacting or a melodramatic reveal.

While I expect that @mark-carney.bsky.social will never see this much less take any action that the gang of fascists and criminals running the US will disagree with, Canada keeps a list of people not allowed to enter the country. Everyone employed by ICE should be on it forever. #politics #cdnpoli

And so begins the new academic term.

Funny how I never get tired of saying that at my age.

Dangerous and irresponsible, and also very Poilievre.
This is a dangerous and irresponsible response.

Cheering the illegal abduction of a foreign head of state and celebrating U.S. control over another country is wrong.

Canada cannot pick & choose when international law applies. If the rules only matter when it’s convenient, they don’t protect anyone

All of the movies I'm looking forward to watching this year seem to be on the list I've been building of late 70s to early 90s SF/F B-movies. It began with that Roddy Piper-featured classic of post-apocalyptic ridiculousness, "Hell Comes to Frog Town."

Well, it's been a little while, but welcoming 2026 brings me back to BlueSky. Thinking I'll lurk around here for a while.

In 25 years, every business school in the country will be doing case studies about how a long defunct company known as “Google” once had an unbeatable lock on online information retrieval and then started doing shit like this.

Someone once wrote that life goes in several cycles of birthday parties, weddings, and funerals. Not thinking about it too hard, but my kids are entering the first cycle of weddings and I'm coming into the second. Oldest daughter's best friend's wedding today.

Hello Blue Sky. I have been neglectful and I'm sorry. Today is a new day.

My oldest daughter is binge watching Star Trek Voyager, and has burned through a season and a half. In the last few days. I've been in the room in the enough to realize I'd forgotten just how inconsistent the writing was for Neelix in the early seasons.

Disturbing considering the generally untrustworthiness of those summaries, like anything else produced by "AI". There are better search engines that don't seem to manipulate my results and a couple of them seem to not even do ads.
Hey is it bad if google AI search results stop people from leaving google dot com 99% of the time? All our news and information creators can survive just fine with one percent of their previous search traffic right? I’m sure it’s fine. www.404media.co/googles-ai-i...

A piece at a time, I'm trying to divest myself of some big tech influence. Liking Vivaldi browser so far and experimenting with a couple of non-US search engines.

Trying to relax and build the strength to just let today's political wreckage wash over me. But experience has taught me, in the immortal words of Howard Jones, time will wear away the stone.

I may be too jaded for a cheesy cinematic superhero romp. The messaging is great. I enjoyed the soundtrack, the casting was good, the acting solid, the effects excellent, the writing… well, the casting was good, the acting solid, and the effects excellent. And the messaging is great. #Superman

xAI has disabled Grok, deleted a slew of its antisemitic and neo-Nazi posts, posted a statement, and are evidently rolling back the prompt that made it identify as "MechaHitler," but this new low for Elon Musk's chatbot will live in internet infamy:
Elon Musk's Grok Chatbot Goes Full Nazi, Calls Itself 'MechaHitler'
Elon Musk's Grok chatbot has unleashed a slew of antisemitic commentary and praised Hitler after apparent change allowed to be 'politically incorrect'
