I don't consider these cultural holes.

Inspired by a post I just saw in which someone admitted they hadn’t seen a single episode of Friends nor the film Love Actually… what cultural hole do you have that’s a bit weird for your generation?

I’ll go first: I haven’t seen Dirty Dancing.

Railway lines used to produce helpful guides to places that could be visited by train to encourage people to use the train. Who wouldn't want to visit 'The Switzerland of England' or 'The Most Perfect Specimen of a Medieval Castle'!

The image is a black and white photograph of the interior of a greenhouse. The focus is on a variety of lush, tropical plants, seen through the framework of the glass structure. The plants are positioned around wooden planter. The overall mood is serene and slightly melancholic, heightened by the monochromatic palette and the play of light and shadow within the enclosed space. There's a sense of tranquility and perhaps even a hint of aged beauty in the juxtaposition of the natural growth with the older metal framework of the building.

I have deleted my account using this workaround.

Potential workaround if you're already logged in and get prompted by the ToS notification: opening this "privacy policy" link www.academia.edu/privacytakes you to a page where you can access the drop-down menu and reach "account settings." From there I was able to delete my account without agreeing.

An interesting thread on the language of LLMs.
naomialderman.bsky.social
I am (self-evidently) very interested in language. And also in technology. From that perspective, the rise of LLMs has created many new things for me to think about.

One is: why is it that certain very small clusters of words are *clearly written by an LLM*? What is the quality of that writing?
