This should be a slam dunk solution. We have the technology to make it much harder for people to drive at excessive speeds but we do not do it, because far too many think that is some infringement on their freedom.

The US DOT cancelled $20 m in funding for Boston's Roxbury street improvement project, which was awarded in 2022.

The project was likely targeted because it prioritized bus riders, pedestrians, and cyclists. The Trump administration has stated that its focus is expanding road capacity for cars.

Somerville Police got a grant for bike safety.

Their interpretation of bike safety? Harassing cyclists!

I asked. Yes it's the same grant as in previous years.

shocked, SHOCKED, to find that the police are wasting everyone's time and money by pulling over cyclists for no good reason, despite the city council ASSURING us this wouldn't happen.

Despite assurances from our city councilors, it appears funding they approved is being used by @cityofsomerville.bsky.social police department to harass micro mobility users

But also, like, if you want to change the behavior of the most powerful union in the city? Maybe like check whether they have lied to your face for several years running and then don't believe a mealy mouthed memo saying "not this year sir, not us, not again sir."

As a matter of fact, Somerville Police explicitly stated tonight that they are de-prioritizing stopping cyclists for safe maneuvers like the “Idaho Stop” and that supervisors instruct officers to focus on actually unsafe riding. This is precisely what we have been calling for, and progress.
Here's a resolution from @benforward3.bsky.social in 2023 (and unanimously approved) calling on the city to "prioritize its public safety resources according to a fact-based understanding of road safety"

Or, you know, keep accepting small grants to not do that. That's cool too I guess.

Jake, thank you for the update. I have questions:
What is a true Idaho stop? Does the rider have to put their foot down? Does it work differently at a light vs a stop sign? How about during the exclusive pedestrian light phase?
I'm not sure how folks on here came away thinking the City Council funded enforcement of cyclists doing The Idaho Stop, but in fact the opposite happened last night: www.jakeforsomerville.org/funding_for_...
