What they are sharing is what works for them, and while it might be useful, there is no one way to get your writing out into the world. Do what works for you.

The elderly man glanced at her and then back to Sam, “Can I just tell your wife she has beautiful eyes?” Getting here at the same time as the old folk’s home wasn’t bad timing after all, even if the checkout counter was about to be swamped.
Sam rubbed his neck and broke eye contact. “Oh…she’s…we’re just friends. We’re just friends running errands together.” Why was the thought of them together so thoroughly absurd it required correction?
“Oh.” The old man nodded, gripping his cart preparing to move on.
“Yeah, she’s like my best friend at this point. We’re just hanging out as friends.” Sam spoke quickly. The word friend now spoken four times. Never in her life had Kalie witnessed such a thorough, public, and unnecessary friendzoning.
“Well, have a nice day.” The old man shuffled off to the next section.
Kalie gestured a gob smacked wave. Sam turned back to the yogurt, selecting one flavored like key lime pie. She felt her friend eyeing her as she sighed and returned to the mango yogurt contemplation.
“That was pretty funny right?” He grabbed a second yogurt.
“We didn’t have to correct him. I mean we’re both in our late twenties.” She selected the tried and true strawberry flavor –no adventure today. “Is it so crazy to think we look like we’re married?”

4.5 chapters in. it's a rotation of 5 povs. i got a little stuck 'cause i'm reintroducing ryan's older brother AND introducing his oldest brother. they're not in the main wip, so i haven't a clue what they're like.

Well, funny you ask, 'cause I'm pantsing this whole thing and have no clue. So far it's all about a group of teens about to start a D&D group, but all I've gotten is a ton of drama. I've even renamed it to Dungeons & Drama. It's a kinda spin off/AU/continuation of my main wip.

I get to school and go to my regular locker to grab a textbook for class. I hesitate. Why do I smell coffee? Of course, I decide it's nothing and open up the red door. Inside— ohh, inside! —makes my heart bound outta my chest! That beloved pink, orange, and white paper bag and a regular iced coffee from Dunks is sitting and waiting for me. My lips curl to a genuine, appreciative smile! Haha, fuck yes! I love that wonderful girl so fucking much! It makes the beginning of my bad day so much better!

Though, as I wonder how Jess could have known I didn't just stay home sick, I discover the book I needed isn't actually inside my locker. And shit, I know exactly where it is, too! Well, and so… my crappy day continues, but at least I have an iced coffee and a pastry! With a sigh, I remove the treats from the locker and go on with my day, strolling ridiculously late to my first class— enough time to get the homework. Ugh!

The rest of my day has exactly the same vibe. Man, I swear I'm not usually this forgetful or stupid! To sum it up, the unfortunate Top 3:

3) I get a D on my English paper, which I worked really fucking hard on!
2) New seating arrangements in French 3 has me now sitting next to Paulie's crazy ex— by which I mean she actually stalked him and caused some major-ass drama —and this arrangement is all for group projects which means I have to work with her, too. Yay!
1) And to top it off, I'm now wearing sweaty-ass gym shorts I shoulda taken home a week ago because I sat in chocolate pudding during lunch. Some kids still call me Tinkles from an incident that happened years ago, I didn't need to add Poopsy or Shitter to my roster of crude nicknames.

Every “rule” has an exception. Double negatives? Useful in dialogue. Split infinitives? Sometimes more precise. Sentence-ending prepositions? Natural in speech. The trick: know the rule, then break it to serve rhythm, tone, or truth.
