Also ever wonder why that dude who wrote a paper in 4 hours after procrastinating for a month and still got an A, was also a great test taker?
He figured out how to force himself to concentrate and do tasks efficiently.

And here's the thing, even though the best outcome is learning the material (which often these late night projects were), the "I had to BS my way through" is actually learning skills. It's problem solving, creativity, improvisation and thinking on your feet.

I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.

wrote 20 pages on Faulkner's The Bear four hours before final papers were due on trucker pills and coffee and cigarettes and got an A, fuck you.
You people couldn't hang with real slackers.

I have the answer to this and it's similar to why we have Avatar sequels...
Shanghai Disneyland opens the Tron roller coaster and it's got a huge fanbase, to the point where fans demand one in the states.
Tron 2025 gets greenlit around the same time as the Tron Coaster in Magic Kingdom. 1/2

Pretty confused by how TRON became a big-budget movie franchise. Was it a bit hit when it came out? No. Did it become a big hit on video/TV? Also no. Do people have fond nostalgic memories of it? Eh kinda but not really. Was it secretly great and critically acclaimed? No again

Listen #Writers, I don't know how to market this book (I don't know how to market in general), but it is very short and contains humor aimed at other writers. So maybe by the end of 60ish pages you'll have a laugh and decide that you'd like to give me a chance as an author.

Flash forward, I start talking to an author at a book festival. Then I looked down and realized I had literally just bought her book like a week ago. It was a really nice moment to tell her that I had just bought her book and that I thought it was well done! 2/2

So, I was at a nearby book store recently and I went to the kids section and they had an area for local authors. This book caught my attention from the really nice illustration, so I bought it and plan to give it to my kid as part of Christmas. 1/2

Unless we post about our books, you don't know they exist.

And unless happy readers recommend us, our books die.

And we don't eat.

There is no "marketing dept". Algorithms favour the megastars, so they're no help.

— only buy tech too old to have AI built in
— painstakingly disable AI every time they add it to something that used to work perfectly well
— if it can't be switched off, abandon the platform or tool
— if there are no good alternatives, avoid the AI parts
— patiently wait for the crash

I like that I can fully decline to flip to the last page/I can decide if I like the book I can look up other works.

Physical books are truly on of the last ad free experiences.

They'd put ads in the taste of food if they could.

However, I always thought that at some point ads would reach a critical mass where there was just no where else to squeeze them in.

I'm just flabbergasted at how unavoidable the ads are and how much companies are willing to enshittify their own products just to show you ads. 2/3

When I was a kid there was already a ton of media that depicted the future as cluttered with ads and I don't think anyone doubted that we were heading to a future with more ads.
