In the moment, I really do believe with all my heart that I'm answering these writing related prompts in good faith, and every time I circle back to re-read my own response I realize all I did was talk about the humiliation kink again.

but it really is hard to write those honest feelings down, it is like being exposed. so a lot of MCs are now untouchable unflappable badasses, which is totally valid i'm not the MC police. But a lot of really interesting conflicts stem from HOW we deal with being a person with hurtable feelings.

I think it comes down to a lot of the "flaws" we see in modern fic esp romantasy are actually strengths. "I'm a lone wolf who can't let anyone get close to me so I'll never know love" like ok that's nice i'm a cringing little dog who can't stop falling in love with strangers. help :)))

Hate when the hero's flaws are "quirky and clumsy but only in a cute way" and the villain's flaws are "genocide due to traumatic childhood." And they're in the same book.😭🤣

Flawed MCs need authors willing to let them be lame and cringe, with secondhand embrassment off the charts: small, jealous, petty, not gonna say what's bothering them you have to read their mind, proud, vain, they bend over and their buttcrack shows so they kill all the witnesses. This is relatable.

But there's some sort of nebulous limit, perhaps? I know I've disengaged from a lot of media because the MC was too unlikable.

super villains in #dogwood2 like "yeah they were originally gonna repurpose the pre-wwii buildings but they couldn't afford licensed contractors so they just got the locals to do quick demo under the facade of keeping money in economy but really it was so they could skimp on lead/asbestos safety."

Once you get past Owen's lies, Kenzie's apathy, Wesley's passivity, and absolutely everything about Rowan Donovan, they all 4 have bright, shining moments of earnestness, sincerity and vulnerability that humiliate me, their author, which nourishes the sadistic voyeurism inherent to all readers.
