We need more extroverted autistic people in fiction. We're still awkward and need our space, but I have made peace with being a weirdo and I won't find other oddballs in my safety zone! Just don't fuck with my safety zone.

Reminder! "Best Of" lists are tied to publicity and marketing budgets, who is able to hire publicists, what books made it to the top of a TBR stack *thousands* of arcs tall, and the shrinking # of outlets still doing book coverage.
Talk about your favorite books!
They likely weren't read. ❤️📚
A lot of Best Of lists are now out or on their way. Congrats to you all. It’s an accomplishment I hope every writer gets to experience at one time or another. Not everyone will, though, and to those writers, know I see you too. Keep telling your stories. Regardless of lists, the world needs them.

"What would you think of becoming my squire?"

A chance encounter gives Seff, a poor girl in a working family, the opportunity for respect - prestige, even. She could become a hero.
Or this new line of work could get her killed in horrifying ways.
She'll find out, one way or another.
#DeckTheHalls

We're matching up our work to the Major Arcana Tarot Cards. So, tell us how your characters (or places, things, or events) match up!

Today's card is: WHEEL OF FORTUNE

What character (or whatever fits here) of yours would you put on it and how do they fit the meanings?

Grinks & Co. isn't a "steamy romance." It's pornography, and sex takes center stage in every chapter (even though there's also plot and dialogue and fun characters). No slow burn here.
Context: Grinks is half Taraltos' height.

I felt the third punch stop my heart. My morning was going even worse than usual.
He would have been glad to see his sunflowers towering seven feet tall, but they'd been only one foot the night before.
Continental drift was directly responsible for me falling in love. Let me explain.
Hello, everyone! This Friday, let's loosen up a little. Who wants to share some #NotRealOpeners?
Opening lines are hard - maybe writing a couple practice ones will help loosen things up!
I'll start:
"No matter how cold the water was, Jane knew the treasure would be worth it."

Seff thinks about the future a lot these days. Not only is she carefully planning how to find her boss' missing husband, she's frantically (sometimes avoiding) thinking about her long-term future as a servants of the gods ... or not.

How much does your character think about the future?

Do they have plans for retirement and a pension set up? A distant dream but no real plans? Do they live each day as it comes and never think about it?

Great prompt!
Gallara is the best Fool. Her whole character arc is being outside of her comfort zone and growing as a person on an undesired journey. She also makes plenty of mistakes and tries to learn from ... most of them.

I completed a major chunk of Seff's story that looks like the finale of Act II. I have a great idea of where I'm taking the story next.
I've also made some great progress in Grinks & Co.
Basically, I'm proud that I'm still writing.

As Drohim's squire, Seff gets a cot in a tiny private room at the temple of the Many. Drohim gets a modest but comfortable set of rooms - pretty much a small apartment - and keeps it clean and orderly. They're on the road now, though.

The Prophecies duology satirizes lots of tropes from video games and other media. This reference to games like Legend of Zelda that lock you in a room with the boss monster as soon as you enter, doesn't actually factor into the scene or the plot; it was just amusing for me to include.
December 5, 2025 at 12:43 AM
#SFFChat
Interactive games are a way to immerse the player in a story and let them help determine the outcome. Board games like Mansions of Madness and roleplaying video games are terrific for this.
I also see TTRPGs as collaborative storytelling between the GM and the players, with lots of improv.
#SFFChat Q3: What unique storytelling opportunities do games (of any kind you wish to talk about!) offer?
December 5, 2025 at 12:36 AM
#SFFChat
Seff's story would be an open-world action-horror game with puzzles and clues to follow.

Prophecies (the one with Gallara, et al) would be more like a JRPG (the story throws some satire at the genre already). It would be more lighthearted than Seff's and keep the story's Easter egg jokes.
#SFFChat Q2: If your story were a game of some kind, what would it be (e.g RPG, TTRPG, a boardgame of some kind, survival horror, first-person shooter, etc)?
December 5, 2025 at 12:31 AM
#SFFChat
Drohim would be the upright moral guy that you can impress by saying you value honor and loyalty. Seff would be an NPC because she's a teenager.

Gallara: shy, needs a gentle touch
Zedenko: has trouble settling down
Alakshi: energetic party gal
Jorang: much like Drohim
#SFFChat Q1: If your characters were in a dating sim (or another kind of game if you prefer), what roles would they have or what archetypes would they fulfill?

E.g. Healer, summoner, maybe in a dating sim they're the mayor's daughter, or in a farm sim they're an angry chicken! Be creative!
