we’re always talking about majora’s mask and twilight princess when it comes to the darker aspects of the legend of zelda, but what are some dark and emotionally heavy elements from the other zelda games that we do not talk about enough? 🕸️

Okay, this is the correct time to ask this question: what actually happened to this Link?

The trauma it must have caused Link as a child both in OOT and WW to go through those journeys to defeat a power hungry demon king.

Especially OOT, people don’t really think about how symbolic it is of the loss of innocence and childhood.

The fact that Botw starts by awakening up in the ruins of a post apocalyptic world. The fact that Hyrule, once the most powerful nation in all of the world, fell under 24 hours to darkness which results in the deaths of thousands, possibly millions of people.

Wind Waker's setting is a post-Noah's Ark flood, and it all ends with the Hyrule you knew and loved from Ocarina of Time getting lost below the waves. All of Hyrule's history is forever lost along with the man who tried to conquer it...and the King who ruled it.

It's all about the end of an age.

In BotW, King Rhoam was horrible to Zelda: publicly berating her. In his secret diary, he realizes he's been mistaken & wants to start treating her nicely when she returns from the Spring of Wisdom.

Instead the Calamity returns on the day Zelda visits the Spring, & he dies unable to make amends.

Link is a teenager at the oldest in most of these games, often a child around ten years old. I'd be silent, too, if I had to explore dark caverns and decrepit buildings, solve puzzles that could kill me if I misstep, and slay monsters ten times my size with the weight of the kingdom on my shoulders.

Spirit Tracks Zelda literally "dies" because her spirit is separated from her body, and her "corpse" is used to host a Demonic entity

How Vaati became tempted by the vices of people and Ezlo's cap in Minish Cap. It's a bit similar as a villain origin story to the Skull Kid in Majora's Mask. But where the latter was a prankster tempted by an evil mask, Vaati was tempted by the concept of evil itself.

Link's childhood was violently ripped away from him in Ocarina of Time. Poor kid loses so much, including seven years of his life!

Even after Zelda sends him back, the damage was already done and he'll never be a carefree child again. 😭

It still hurts me what happened to Fi in SS, and the curse Demise placed over Link. It sounds pretty simple, but damn, at least talk about it a little more, Nintendo 😭

Breath of the wild. Imagine waking up in a cave with no memories, no idea who you are, then finding out all your friends are dead, almost everyone you knew is long gone, and your princess had to sacrifice herself because you couldn’t protect her. Then when you finally win and get her back…totk.

Wind Waker Ganondorf had a pretty sad background if you take into account his origins.

Wind Waker's great sea is insanely tragic if you think abt it for more than a second. Exploring the consequences of causing a self imposed extinction event in a new wind saga game would go crazy, cuz they don't talk about it at all in PH or ST.

The Titans still emit the Champions' SOS Morse code.

What's interesting is that the signal starts immediately for Ruta, Rudania, and Naboris.

Medoh is the only exception, the signal starts a few seconds later.
