Taxes need to feel just, and that often doesn’t fall neatly in line with rationality. As someone who was longtime childless, I instinctively recoil at the idea of paying an extra tax because I didn’t have children (also because I actually wanted some). I would have no issues with child tax credits.

Here's a good example: You can be arrested for holding up a magazine because its cover shows the sign, "I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action."
