Greetings! I am not sure how much I will use this platform alongside others, but I am excited to get to explore it!

I design and program software and games, enjoy sci-fi, and do some political activism.

You can also find me at @ZMYaro on most other socials (especially mastodon.social).

Obviously I talk a lot about bike/ped safety.

But something that is really crazy is how much less safe you *in a car* since 2010.

In spite of all the additional safety technology, vehicle occupants are less safe today than they were 15 years ago.

Every year, I say goodbye to friends who get priced out.

Every year, more friends talk about how much longer they can afford to stick around.

Why do I want the city to build more housing? Is it because I'm in the pocket of big developers*? Is it because I want to displace longtime residents?

No, it's because I very selfishly want my friends to be able to find places to live near me. I want friends who are a walk/bike/bus away and not […]

There was a post on TikTok recently talking about a new development promising $3k a month for two bedrooms, and you could tell immediately who in the comments was or was not from the area based on how they reacted to that price.

(FWIW $3k for a new apartment w/ 2 beds a 10 minute walk to […]

Also (getting further into #TronAres spoilers), did it stick in anyone else's head that the character who obeyed the main villain's orders to a fault was the only black main character? 😬

#TronAres was better than I was worried it would be!!

That said, did anyone else get the impression there was an earlier draft of the script that was supposed to feature Sam, and then they wrote Eve into his part when they couldn't get Garrett Hedlund?

I may need more sleep.

I tried to move my mouse off my leftmost display and onto a paper to the left of it 😅

Of course the answer to her false concern is to make the cycleway wider, so that fire services can use it in an emergency - bypassing all the SUVs blocking the main roadway…

In London, the east-west cycleway is regularly used by emergency services that no longer have to deal with cars.

"We're under siege. We're being invaded by our own military." Last night, federal agents detained people for whom they had no warrant. They arrested people with the indignity of not letting them put clothes on. They ziptied children. CHILDREN. abc7chicago.com/post/ice-chi...

This was also how other profitable companies (e.g., JoAnn Fabrics) went bankrupt after being bought out by private equity companies. It is pretty high on the list of those things that feel as though they should absolutely be illegal, but somehow aren't.

EA didn't have that debt. The buyers didn't have enough money to buy the company, so they took $20B in loans leveraged against the company they would own in the future. Since they won the bid, the loans went through, and now the company is in debt.

A lot of people are (understandably) focused on the Saudi Arabia and Kushner part of this, but the far bigger immediate impact will come from the new private EA being on the hook for $20 billion in debt. That could mean mass layoffs, more aggressive monetization, and other big cost-cutting measures

Beautiful bike infrastructure means you can dress for the destination not the ride

In Boston I dress like a road cone & wear a helmet used by professional cyclist racers not because it makes me safer (surrounded by drivers on their phones) but bc I don't want to be victim blamed should I be killed
