House funds DHS, Democrats push

8h

After nearly four days of a partial shutdown, the House voted to temporarily fund the Department of Homeland Security while Democrats pressed for ICE reforms that risked losing momentum.

ICE hasn't stopped brutalizing people or shredding the Constitution, it's just that corporate media turned the camera as the call for action got too loud and the Democrats stepped in and made sure the issue got changed.

If you sit for a second, you'll recognize that's what happened with BLM, too.

Democrats want commonsense reform for ICE:

End the roving patrols and racial profiling.

Take accountability and abide by the same rules as local police.

Masks need to come off, body cameras need to stay on—no secret police in the United States of America.

Trump's pumping agents onto ICE’s payroll at record speed.

He's giving them a mere 47 days of training (Trump is the 47th President).

And he's sending them onto the streets with loaded guns and telling them they have full immunity.

Congress should not be funding ICE’s abuses.

If there were a betting pool, what‘s more likely to end the plan to send federal prosecutors into ICE surge areas:
1. Congress
2. Mass resignations by AUSAs around the country
Congress has got to force an end to these surges.
Exclusive: DOJ is requiring all 93 US attorneys to designate prosecutors for "emergency jump teams" supporting surge districts dealing with assaults & obstruction of federal officers, per internal memo. Comes as more Minn. prosecutors resign. news.bloomberglaw.com/us-law-week/...

Schumer won. He got the other 5 spending bills passed and still gets to negotiate over DHS. A win that a lot of Do Something Bluesky folks are unable to simply take.
Congress ends shutdown, approves $1.2T in funding — and sets up DHS cliff
President Donald Trump is expected to swiftly sign the legislation.

"We may be in for a rough few weeks as congressional Democrats try to force changes on ICE by withholding funding for DHS. But we should not shrink from the fight. Public opinion is strongly on our side. More importantly, it is the right thing to do."

House now voting on the Republican rule (procedural measure) to bring the funding bill to the floor. All Dems present and voting against. R leaders were broadcasting a lot of confidence about winning this vote, which once again was misplaced. Likely they get it eventually but it's not going well rn

ICE is murdering American citizens, kidnapping children, illegally entering homes, and lying about it.

While the Admin continues defending their crimes, I’ll keep voting on behalf of my Hudson Valley community and saying NO to funding Trump’s ICE.

These are all good suggestions, and the underlying point is right. I would add one thing, though. The critical reform (if you want one) is accountability. DOJ and DHS must commit to allowing state and local agencies to investigate and prosecute ICE and BP agents.

Schulz: This was a breaking point for me and the way that the administration responded to it. I didn't think what's happening right now with ICE could happen in America. I thought our institutions, I thought the Constitution would hold up.
