Late '90s, Nelsonville, Ohio. A rally for Willie Nelson's Farm Aid campaign. #JesseJackson, Martin Sheen. (Willie phoned in bc he couldn't come.) Someone brought a horse (who knows why, it's Ohio, not Texas!). Up Jesse goes, a bit wobbly at first, grabs someone's Stetson to complete the look. 🧵👇 1/2

“Jesse Jackson Gave Peace a Chance!”

One of the Rev. Jesse Jackson’s great legacies is his record, as a man of faith and a presidential candidate, of embracing anti-war movements, advocating for diplomacy over militarism, and working for deep cuts in Pentagon spending in order to fund human needs.

jesse jackson was constantly played as a punchline on 90s late-night TV to the point that i didn't understand his history of activism and serious left-leaning political platform until i was much older. i have to think, to some degree, that was on purpose.

RIP to Jesse Jackson, who in this debate w/David Duke in 1977 delivered (until the host cut him off) a message of unity and against "national isolationism" that's important to hear today. He also ended the show w/one of the sickest burns ever directed at Duke: "You're not even a legitimate Klansman"

Jesse Jackson was a product of his time. His 1988 presidential campaign was endorsed by Democratic Socialists of America and by Bernie Sanders. He spoke at Hugo Chavez's funeral in Venezuela. He helped prepare for today's rediscovery of socialism in the US.
