A fantastic vintage 1940s 50s one of a kind handmade sterling silver and copper abstract biomorphic modernist pendant. An intricate incredibly unique piece of mid century modernist wearable art jewelry! Complex design with a bar across the top from which hang three rows of cutout shapes in sterling silver that are all attached at backs with copper wire that runs the length of each row. A sort of modernist jewelry 'Rorschach' test that could be interpreted a number of ways. Biomorphic forms are abstract shapes, patterns, or designs inspired by living organisms and natural structures, using fluid, curving lines that suggest plants, animals, or body parts, breaking away from rigid geometry to evoke nature's organic qualities and dynamism in art, architecture, and design. Biomorphic jewelry design is a 20th century phenomenon especially from about 1940 to the 1960s. Measures 2.75" tall by 1.75" widest, and weighs 10.7 grams total. Unmarked, and I'm certain it was originally purchased in an art gallery or fair with accompanying paperwork that would have been lost over the years. Could be worn on a chain, a black cord, or a neck ring depending on the wearer. I can provide a black cord at no extra charge if desired, just let me know when making the purchase. From the estate of a NYC collector who traveled the world for her job in the publishing industry, and who acquired the bulk of her collection in the 1950s/60s/70s eras. Excellent vintage condition.

What's up?

I've got proper man flu aka a cold, but it's laid me low so haven't been to the studio this last week. I'd only just started feeling vaguely human again after recovering from Big C. So here's a piece from 2023 - 24 before I got ill. Quite proud of this one.

A sculptural vintage 1950s one of a kind handmade sterling silver and carved dark wood biomorphic modernist pendant. Entirely handmade hand carved dark wood that has been wrapped and pierced with sterling wire that also forms the bail at top! So sculptural and simple, but really makes a statement! Purchased with other pieces of mcm modernist wood jewelry including a signed pendant necklace by NYC artist-jeweler Adda Husted-Andersen, but this pendant is unmarked. Measures 3" long by about 1" at widest. Tested and guaranteed to be as described. From the estate of a NYC collector who travelled the world for her career in publishing and purchased interesting and unique jewelry and objects along the way. Excellent vintage condition.

Abstraction. Surrealism. Born and trained in Minnesota, Gerome Kamrowski moved to New York City in 1938 and soon joined a group of American artists there who were strongly influenced by many of Surrealism's basic goals. Like their European counterparts, these young Americans explored the depths of the unconscious to help free their creative imaginations. To Kamrowski, Surrealism represented "the integration of the real world and the functional." This 1945 painting comes from a series Kamrowski did of a world of poetic forms that evoke both microscopic views of cells, nerves, and fantastic biomorphic creatures as well as cosmic space. Unlike those artists who only present us with the external structure of things, Kamrowski, as the Surrealist poet André Breton once said, "allows us to be present at their formation."

A biomorphic modernist vintage 1950s handmade studio pottery abstract design tray/artwork by ceramicist Aviva Margalit of the Ein Hod colony in Israel. Ein Hod became an artists' colony in 1953. The driving spirit behind the project was Marcel Janco, an acclaimed Dada artist, who kept the village from being demolished by the security forces and convinced the government to let him build an artists' colony there instead. In 1957, in close proximity to one another, Itche Mambush and his wife Aviva Margalit opened pottery workshops in Ein Hod Artists Village, see my last photo for a short biography of the artist from the Information Center for Israeli Artists. Ten Ein Hod residents have won the Israel Prize, awarded annually on Israel Independence Day, including Genia Berger, one of the founders of the colony who won the prize in 1953, Zahara Schatz, for painting and sculpture in 1955, and Marcel Janco, for painting in 1967. According to Robert Nechin, who lives in the village, the artists working there today "are fully aware of the illustrious example of these great artists and scholars, who lived and are still living among them. This exceptional tray measures 12" across by 9.75" tall by 1.5" high at the rim. Signed at back as shown in the photos, "Margalit Ein-Hod Israel". Excellent vintage condition.

Born in Turkish Armenia, Arshile Gorky immigrated to the United States in the 1920s and became an influential member of the New York art scene. Profoundly interested in avant-garde European art, he experimented with a variety of styles. Young artists working in New York were particularly stimulated by the European Surrealists, many of whom moved to the city before and during World War II and whose circle Gorky joined. The 1940s, especially the years 1944–47, marked the creation of his most important work, produced in a kind of stream of consciousness or “automatic” manner of painting. The Plough and the Song reflects the artist’s indebtedness to the lyrical Surrealism of Joan Miró, but the sketchy handling of paint, translucent color, and tumbling pile of shapes are hallmarks of Gorky’s mature work. A delicate contour line delineates the biomorphic forms in the center of the composition, in marked contrast to the loose brushwork that defines the background. The title signals Gorky’s nostalgia for his heritage, as the artist wrote in 1944: “You cannot imagine the fertility of forms that leap from our Armenian plows. . . . And the songs, our ancient songs of the Armenian people, our suffering people. . . . So many shapes, so many shapes and ideas, happily a secret treasure to which I have been entrusted the key.” Deeply earthbound and poetic, The Plough and the Song is at once a still life, a landscape, and a fantasy. The Travelling Performers, 1926 Oil on canvas Titre inconnu (noyer indifférent), 1929, Oil on canvas 92.2 × 73.2 cm Hilti Art Foundation, Schaan Titre inconnu, from Tanguy's early Surrealist phase, is populated by enigmatic, unfamiliar figurations. They are clearly distinguishable but unidentifiable, suggesting both inorganic and organic origins, coming perhaps from the depths of the oceans, the expanses of the desert, or the infinity of the universe. The shapes could as easily represent the beginnings of natural history as the catastrophic end of civilization. The four largest of them, casting shadows from an invisible source of light, have congregated around a patch of fog rising in delicate tendrils. Both fog and figurations are seen against a dark ground whose relief-like surface is broken by spectral, white horizontal bands that fade into the immeasurable, pitch-black depths of space. We gaze upon an alien, nonhuman, and yet disconcertingly real universe that is in the process of becoming or dying, buffeted by the primeval clash between light and dark. The Swiss psychiatrist C. G. Jung, who acquired Tanguy's painting the year it was created, discusses it in detail in his book Flying Saucers: A Modern Myth of Things Seen in the Sky (1979, first published in German in 1958). He associates it with bleakness, coldness and human detachment, with cosmic inhumanity and endless abandonment, additionally interpreting it as an example of the loss of beauty and meaning in contemporary art, which has thrown human beings back on themselves as viewing subjects. In this surreal otherworldly landscape, Tanguy presents us with an ultra-realistic depiction of the unreal by employing a deliberate, precise method of painting. "The Birth of Liquid Desires" by the Spanish Surrealist artist Salvador Dalí. It was painted between 1931 and 1932 using oil and collage on canvas. The work is a striking example of Surrealist art, full of subconscious imagery related to the artist's psychological conflicts and obsessions, particularly sexuality and sexual desire. The large biomorphic structure dominates the composition and suggests various forms, including a violin or the weathered rock formations of Port Lligat, Spain. The central figure is an androgynous creature, which merges the figures of the father, son, and mother in a grotesque dream image. The painting is part of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Italy.

Of all the New York School painters, scholar and artist Robert Motherwell aligned himself most closely with modern European art and literature. An early painting by Motherwell, Wall Painting with Stripes fuses the geometric rigor found in the art of Henri Matisse, Piet Mondrian, and Pablo Picasso with an organic or biomorphic abstract language that is reminiscent of the imagery employed by Surrealists Max Ernst and Joan Miró. Although signed and dated 1944, this painting shows signs of having been altered over time by the artist. Pentimenti (evidence of previous compositions), including a complex network of lines that were simplified into egg-shaped forms and bulging curves, are visible underneath the vertical bands of ocher and white paint. Kandinsky created Comets in 1938 for Verve Magazine. During this time Kandinsky had fled Germany after a Nazi smear campaign against the art school Bauhaus, whete he was teaching. While in Paris, Kandinsky began to feel increasingly isolated and underwent a noticeable shift in his art style. His work began to express more biomorphic shapes and elements and take on softer tones. During this time many of his works often convey a more peaceful, listless tone.

Early in his career, he was active in the New York School of Abstract Expressionism, a mid-20th-century movement of avant-garde artists who saw abstraction as the essential vehicle for conveying intense emotion and exploring spirituality and the unconscious through color, form, space, and gesture. Morrison later turned to nature and the earth for inspiration and subject matter, producing paintings, wood collages, drawings, rubbings, and prints that embodied the spiritual concerns of his Native American culture. Many of his later works feature highly abstracted landscapes with high horizon lines and a flattened perspectives, a signature motif that embodied Morrison’s spiritual and symbolic methodology. Though his sculptures and collages could be monumental in scale, Morrison often chose to produce modestly-sized works that could be completed quickly. Indeed, a number of these smaller works were part of his extended series of “surrealist landscapes,” dreamlike depictions of land and sky that resulted from automatic drawing techniques he adopted as a way to tap into the mind’s subconscious.

I also can't stop seeing the ways the web designer has ZERO concept of usability for people with any vision issues, which tracks for this whole project
