I discovered Calvino through If On a Winter's Night, and I still love it a lot. But Cosmicomics is the masterpiece IMO, along with Invisible Cities.

My top three Calvino: 1. The Nonexistent Knight 2. Mr. Palomar 3. Cosmicomics (just edging Invisible Cities). My recent Calvino discovery is that he spent time in America during the civil rights movement (‘59-‘60), met MLK, and wrote of his experiences during that time. A marvelous human.

Calvino, Eco, and Borges is my celery, onion and green bell onions (holy trinity). Husband got me Cosmicomics for my last birthday. We read Eco’s The Name of the Rose to each other in bed.

I mean, that's not my favorite of his. Cosmicomics, Tzero, and I should re-read if on a winter's night a traveler. Six Memos for a New Millennium. The Cloven Viscount, the Baron in the Trees.

I love Marcovaldo, and also really love the much more surreal Cosmicomics, but my favorite Calvino for sheer “this shouldn’t work but somehow does” is “if on a winter’s night a traveler”. That one is unlike anything else I’ve read, and is a love letter to being a reader.
