I can't recall which DEC system it was for, but as I understand it an "upgrade" consisted of cutting a circuit trace on one of the boards :-) The 8800 was a neat machine, though I'll admit to drooling over the 9000 when it came out.
Once used a 3090 to do DFTs. 10 ms for 256 samples. Woot!
