Voted against that one. It's setting up a repeat of CPRIT's corruption issues. $3B with no actual oversight isn't how a research fund should be run. Don't get me wrong, CPRIT turned out some good shit. It also wasted shitloads of money.

I want DPRIT (this one), but y'know, transparent.

Why this matters

Earlier this year, the Texas Legislature passed a bipartisan bill to establish the Dementia Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (DPRIT), a pioneering statewide initiative to prevent and cure brain diseases.

Texas Proposition 14, a game-changer to fight Alzheimer’s and other dementias. #TXProp14 would fund the Dementia Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (DPRIT) with a $3 billion investment from the state's budget surplus.

I can understand your take on many of the props, but not on DPRIT. Some pretty good and impressive people involved with CPRIT. I’d guess some impressive folks would be involved with DPRIT—academics and researchers.

Texas is fighting to #ENDALZ at the ballot box 🗳️, and the Association is leading the charge to drive change. Earlier this year, the state legislature established the Dementia Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (DPRIT). Now it’s up to the voters to decide whether or not to fund it.

I'm pretty sure DPRIT got funding, it was a Patrick priority.

Let’s hope DPRIT (www.tmc.edu/ecosystem/dp...) gets the funding it needs, so that labs like UT’s ARTLab (slhs.utexas.edu/research/aph...) can continue to operate while the NIH reduces its grant funding.

We’re very excited about dprit, it’s 3 billion over 10 years for dementia research
May 30, 2025 at 4:04 PM
But have you heard of DPRIT?
May 30, 2025 at 11:18 AM
ummm... CPRIT is how we did that for cancer so he's definitely ignoring the opportunity cost of not passing DPRIT.

also: not necessarily looking for a "cure". treatments, yes.

and it includes money for how to keep family caregivers healthy. #txlege

Brian McBrianFace has not read the DPRIT bill and is 100% unfamiliar with how successful CPRIT is. #txlege

good lord I hate it when these motherfuckers bring up the AK permanent fund. they have no idea what they are talking about.

this "imagine if you invested in vaccines and got a return on it" dude is adding on top of it having no idea what a) CPRIT is and b) that they're proposing DPRIT.

The way the Texas Senate and House work is that the highest priority bills are given the lowest numbers. For example, here are the bills in the Senate that have been given the highest priority. 1 is always reserved for budget, 2 is whatever the session is about, this year it's vouchers.
March 14, 2025 at 10:25 PM
if you’re wondering who voted against DPRIT: pretty sure it was Bob Hall. #txlege
March 5, 2025 at 7:56 PM
Bob: DPRIT? don't like it. haven't cured cancer. won't cure dementia.

Nelson: there will never be just one cure for cancer, but we've definitely helped discover life changing treatments with CPRIT, stupid.
