I think that criticism is evidence of an expectation we as readers have been conditioned to have. I suppose it’s an indictment of the shift in comic book narrative that has occurred over the last 25+ years, ie writing for the trade and event driven storylines, etc. I dont think it’s right or wrong

We don’t know this artist, but we know the material: sardonyx. It’s carefully cut to include a lighter layer on top of a darker layer, and the design is planned accordingly, carving the relief to reveal the dark background. With a bow-driven drill, it probably took months to make.
