#ECSC
Fast forward.

KGB operations in the 1940s–1980s worked to obstruct:

• the ECSC,
• the EEC,
• NATO political integration,
• democratic consolidation in Europe.

Because each of these was a step toward Hugo’s prophecy.

"The European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) was set up after World War II to ensure lasting peace by pooling France's and Germany's vital coal and steel industries under a common authority, making war between them "materially impossible""

European integration was also done with the blessing of the United States after being drawn into two World Wars and a Cold War, knowing afterward that a peaceful Europe was very much in the US national interest. The roots of the EU date back to the founding of NATO and the ECSC in 1949 and 1951.
The EU was created in by people who lived through WWII and saw political and economic integration as a means to bringing peace and stability to the continent.

It is being opposed by Putin, Musk and the others who support Neo Nazis in Europe.

There is another way to read this 2025 British longing for the glory days of 1975

One thing I am exploring in what I am writing is how the UK treated EEC/EU as an international organisation while all along it was a supranational entity.

And the supranationalism was there from even before the EEC, in the ECSC.

I think we now see the EU becoming what it should have been already when the ECSC was created. Instead of only coal and steel, it should have been the "Coal, steal and defense community". This would have tied us into a properly unified Europe instead of a Europe relying on the US.

The reason why the EU's predecessor ECSC was created was to make war between the member states impossible. If a far-right party came into power in Germany, you'd probably prefer it to be bound within that structure.
Indeed, the far-right AfD party actually talks about leaving the EU.

Yup. From the ECSC in 1952 onward European integration was a project to avert renewed war, using economic means. I'm just old enough that I still find it remarkable that it worked.

Great. Something I said last year when Trump was elected. The European and especially German strategy should be to include Ukraine in the whole political and economical structure of Europe. Similar to how the beginning of the EU with ECSC (European Coal and Steal Community)

I can't read the paywalled article, but would note that the foundational premise of the EU and its predecessors (ECSC, EEC) was to tie the economies of historically hostile powers together to make future wars less likely. And it has worked!

...and peace!
The original goal of the ECSC - economic development was only ever the means to an end, this end.
It was built of franco-german (franco-german-dutch-luxembourgish-belgian-italian) reconciliation.
The UK never made its post-WWII peace w/ Germany, which many in🇬🇧still view as a nazi state.

Most importantly, fight against monopolies is at the very heart of the EU: the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) aimed to integrate industries but had strong antitrust provisions in place - not efficiency mantra

The EU was not formed as a competitor to the US. That's Trump BS. The European Union predecessor organisations were formed to make war between European countries impossible. See the Schuman declaration, which led to the ECSC in 1951, the origin of the EU.

European Coal and Steel Community
The European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) was a European organization created after World War II to integrate Europe's coal and steel industries into a single common market based on the principle of supranationalism which would be governed by the creation of a High Authority made up of appointed representatives from the member states who would not represent their national interest, but would take and make decisions in the general interests of the Community as a whole. It was formally established in 1951 by the Treaty of Paris, signed by Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and West Germany and was generally seen as the first step in the process of European integration following the end of the Second World War in Europe. The organization's subsequent enlargement of both members and duties ultimately led to the creation of the European Union.

Letter: Service group creates opportunities
The Early Childhood Service Corps (ECSC) is bridging generations to address two urgent challenges: the shortage of early childhood educators and the growing loneliness among older adults. Founded by Lisa Armao, a leader with over 30 years in early childhood education, ECSC connects older adults with meaningful roles in early childhood classrooms. Lisa saw firsthand the critical gaps in early childhood education, worsened by the pandemic.

the EUs third pillar has nothing to do with trade Kathy. not sure what Niall is talking about. confusing.

You are correct - EU wouldn't welcome a full re-join and the UK doesn't fit in EFTA. Michaels point about joining SM (and customs union) rings true to me but definitely not the Swiss way.

As I understand it, the whole ethos behind the formation of the ECSC, as it was at first, was French and German leaders saying "you know what, instead of wiping out a couple of generations of our people every thirty years, why don't we learn to trade instead"?
