#Eiders
As guest speaker and guide for Seaduck Week here in the Highlands, I've had ample excuses to park myself alongside displaying and comically hormonal Long-tailed Ducks and Eiders - as if an excuse were ever needed... talk about mindfulness 😍

#DucksOutOfWater for #BirdOfTheDay. Female eiders sunning on a slipway, looking very chilled out - a WI (Women's Institute, for those unfamiliar with the term) of ducks.

3/They conclude that a flock of migrating birds, probably eiders, flying in formation is responsible. [Eberhart]

2/10 SCALE OF THE CRISIS

#HPAI has triggered "mass die-offs." In 2022 alone, at least 40K wild birds died in eastern #Canada, including 25K northern gannets, thousands of common murres & eiders.

It's the same virus that has devastated poultry, affecting 15M birds in Canada & 180M in the #U.S.

Absolutely one of my favorite seabirds. In the Netherlands, this is the most common eider species. Steller’s, Spectacled, and King Eiders are rare vagrants here. Sadly, over the past 12 years, this species has been declining rapidly — about 5% per year across the entire Wadden Sea.

A gaggle of geese, a cast of merlins, a water dance of grebes, a swatting of flycatchers, a chime of wrens, a quilt of eiders, a round of robins, a tiding of magpies, a brood of chick's, an exaltation of marks...

And many other groupings, of birds and animals ...

West Exe - spent the morning birding around Dawlish Warren before running 25km from home to Teignmouth in the afternoon. Plenty of time on feet.

Impressive sea at Dawlish.

Birding highlights: Firecrest & Eiders at DW, Cattle Egrets at Powderham

I can never tell if Eiders are really interested in what I say, or whether they're just being sarcastic.

Eiders are everywhere here. The best bird today was a Pomarine Skua, which flew past Seahouses this afternoon. I also had a mechanical with my hire bike, and i had to change the inner tube on my back tyre. That was a pain 😢
