Eine kleine, überwiegend schwarze Libelle mit hellblauen Brustseiten und hellblauem Hinterleibsende sitzt auf gelbgrünem Grund mit hellen und dunklen Flecken - es das ausbleichende Schwimmblatt einer Seerose. Sie hat auffällig rote Augen. Ihre vier klaren, fein schwarz geäderten Flügel hat sie dachartig angelegt.

Small red-eyed damselflies (Erythromma viridulum) lack spots behind their eyes, unusual (to me) for the bright-blue-damsel genre. Emerald spreadwings (Lestes dryas) taunted me on this trip; I only got quick blurry photos. Luckily I’ve seen these in the Pacific Northwest!

A few firsts of the year for us today. Meadow Brown (Maniola jurtina), Large Skipper (Ochlodes sylvanus), Volucella bombylans, and Red-eyed Damselfly (Erythromma najas). Seen at Surlingham and Rockland Broad. More used to seeing Red-eyed Damselflies on lilies than on Hemlock!

#libellente dag 26 nakomertje. Er is nog een juffertje uit hetzelfde geslacht als de roodoogjuffers, maar die heeft geen rode ogen: #kanaaljuffer, Erythromma lindenii. Is zeldzaam in ons land.

What happens when a lake runs out of oxygen. In this case it is Crowhurst Lake, East Sussex, full of cyanobacteria. You can see the dead carp is being colonised as a useful island by Small Red-eyed damselflies (Erythromma viridulum).
