The sky is on fire with this gorgeous sunset over the black silhouette of the Coast Range. There’s a yellow spot just along the horizon where the sun has just settled down, and then layers of orange, salmon pink, purple, blue and even magenta get darker as you go up to the twilight sky above.

The almost-super moon just before it was full. I couldn’t take a moon shot when it was full because of a thick blanket of clouds and rain. But here it was the day before, it’s white and gray face against the black backdrop of the cold heart of space.

I love looking straight up into the forest canopy when I’m hiking and all of the trees seem to be pointing toward heaven. These are giant sequoias in the Northern California redwoods region, so they are massive, giant, gorgeous creatures, and we are very tiny in comparison. The forest floor is covered in green ferns and other foliage, the dark brownish red trunks are dotted with green moss and lichens, the needles up top are fuzzy green, and the sky beyond is light blue and dotted with white clouds that would eventually give way to an all out downpour on the way back.

A clump of moss and lichen on a stick (hidden) on a bed of fallen brown oak leaves. The left side is a cluster of bluish gray textured lung lichen - maybe. That’s what iNaturalist says as its first suggestion. Fluffy green moss grows all around and between its lobes. On the right side is some bright, saturated kelly green tree lungwort lichen. I find this all very stunning and exciting, but I am obviously a total nerdsmobile.
