Why Insuring a Hybrid Electric Car Might Cost More or Less: A Detailed Look
The automotive landscape is rapidly evolving, with hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) becoming increasingly common on our roads. As more drivers embrace these eco-friendly alternatives, a burning question often arises: Are hybrid electric vehicles more expensive to insure? The answer, as with most things in the complex world of insurance, is not a simple yes or no. It is a nuanced picture, painted by a multitude of factors that can either push premiums up or pull them down. This comprehensive guide will delve deep into these factors, providing you with a detailed understanding of what truly influences the cost of insuring your hybrid car.

Did you know?? 🚗
ICE vehicles stopped growing in 2017 and their market share keeps dropping. While many replacements are #HEVs/PHEVs, #BEVs are rising fast. Estimated 20% of total sales by end of 2024. In China, they're 43% of sales; in Europe, 20% What's your main motivation to switch to an EV? 🚗🔋🌍

Not surprisingly @Hyundai posts some impressive numbers.

We’ve got the Ioniq 5 with a monster year, ending up with 44,400 units. Ioniq 6 less impressive, with numbers slightly down. Good sales for their PHEVs/HEVs too.

Maybe its only me, but that graph looks like, on the one side you have fossil-fuels and on the other side you have HEVs, PHEVs and BEVs.

The good news is that BEVs and PHEVs are growing much faster than HEVs now, so HEVs are probably near their zenith - and eventually BEVs will win out.

ICE, PHEVs, and HEVs are #StrandedAssets that generate more environmental issues than BEVs because they have much higher GHG emissions and require greater amounts of mining to keep fueled. By an EV, and/or e-bike or cargo e-bike. 🧪🔌💡🔌🚗🔋🔌🚴

You'd think with the 2025 ICE ban looming, there'd be a rush to grab those dirty petrol guzzlers in the country that led the way. Alas, no. BEVs now account for 91.9% of sales, with HEVs and PHEVs dropping to just 4.8%. Only 45 fossil-fueled cars sold in July. Norway's moved on.

Norway in 2024 was 27% EV's for private vehicles with another 7% PHEVs and 5.6% HEVs

Firms can generate additional credits by exceeding CO2 emissions targets on their ICE vehicle sales (including HEVs and PHEVs)

This extra source of credits has the effect of lowering the % of EVs that a manufacturer has to sell to comply with the mandate

The article states that the reason Honda provided was that they think that EV sales are slowing, which is not correct. The crazy chart also places emphasis on HEVs, not even PHEVs. That seems like a major step back. If I had to guess as to the real reason? They think they cannot compete in EVs.

In June, BEV sales in Spain doubled y-o-y to 11,514. PHEVs (+162%) and HEVs (+24%) also gained market share, while diesel (-41%) and petrol (-14%) fell.

BEVs reached almost 10% of the market, and BEV+PHEV exceeded 20%.

I fully agree that HEVs are nothing more than slightly more efficient ICE vehicles. In some of my other charts I combine ICE + HEV into a single line.

The HEV data reported by SMMT excludes mild hybrids.

I am not sure what you mean with "counting HEV on the same side as BEVs and PHEVs"?

Electric vehicles have an entire alphabet-soup lexicon to describe variations on the technology. EVs include HEVs (hybrids that don’t have plugs), PHEVs (plug in hybrids that can run on electricity or gas), and BEVs (battery powered only.) Now there’s something between PHEV and BEV. It’s called an EREV (extended range electric vehicle.) In China, manufacturers are selling sedans that can go 1300 miles.

The most major reason I cheerlead the Korean automakers the most is precisely because when it comes to actually delivering a steady stream of new product -- whether HEVs, PHEVs, or EVs -- to dealers where consumers can buy them, they're the only mainstream brand actually doing it.
January 31, 2024 at 6:23 PM
I will continue to clown on HEVS and PHEVs, not just on their status as a greenwashing "transition fuel" electrified transport delay program by car companies, but also on the fact that climate change is an actual problem and ending fossil fuel use is why we're doing all of this in the first place

US data is much more encouraging.

"HEVs are already capable of 20%–35% reduction in fuel consumption ..., PHEVs with 35 mile electric drive range or more ... capable of reducing fuel consumption by 68%–74% compared to equivalent conventional ICE vehicles"

It demonstrates why the data is difficult as the average age is around 12 years or so and so technologies that were preferenced earlier HEVs and PHEVs are still a large part of the population.

Thermal Management Secrets: Optimizing Hybrid Battery Lifespan and Performance
The Evolution of Battery Technology in Hybrid Electric Vehicles In the dynamic world of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), the battery is truly the heart of the system. It dictates range, acceleration, efficiency, and ultimately, the vehicle's overall lifespan. However, this sophisticated component is highly sensitive to one often-overlooked factor: temperature. The art and science of maintaining an optimal operating temperature for hybrid batteries, known as thermal management, is not merely a technical detail; it is a critical differentiator that profoundly impacts performance, durability, and safety.
