One of the curiosities of genomics history is that James Watson was vehemently against cDNA sequencing (for ESTs), and fought with Craig Venter & Bernadine Healy who championed it. Tl;dr Watson ended up resigning from the HGP, Venter plowed ahead... and we now have #scRNAseq.

Yeah, this isn't as appreciated in scientific communities as much as it should be, but his side of the HGP very much did prevent Venter and co from being able to patent human DNA. Imagine how slow and expensive genomic research would have been if you had to pay to access sequences?
I asked him what was the most important thing he ever did. He replied “opposing the patenting of human genes”. For a full picture of Jim, his terrible flaws and his insights, we will have to wait for @nccomfort.bsky.social’s forthcoming biography.

When I was at a genome center working on the HGP someone made a logo for the center that had the wrong number of bases per turn. We sent it back and made sure it was correct, even in the logo. Science is to a large extent about sweating details.
