The subject of Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery Expedition (1804-1806), the Missouri flows from western Montana, through Kansas City and joins the Mississippi River in St. Louis. From there, they flow as one to the Gulf of Mexico, forming the fourth longest river system in the world. Rivers are the arteries and veins of our earth, carrying water from snow-capped mountains to fertile plains and from flood-stricken lands to the sea. Artist, architect and environmentalist Maya Lin is keenly aware of their essential place in our fragile ecosystem. Her commitment to our earth and its creatures is also evident on her website, www.whatismissing.net. CITY of ALBUQUERQUE City Hall and Plaza del Sol are closing today, Jan. 30, at 1 p.m. due to planned protest activity Downtown. Normal operations will resume on Monday, Feb. 2.

Sadie Barnette US, b. 1984; lives and works in Oakland, CA Mirror Bar 2022 neon, vinyl on mirrored acrylic in arched frame, holographic vinyl upholstery, glitter plexiglass, found objects This mirrored mini bar pays tribute to the New Eagle Creek Saloon, the first Black-owned gay bar in San Francisco. A haven for the city's multiracial queer community, it was owned and operated by artist Sadie Barnette's father from 1990 to 1993. With neon, glitter, and archival imagery (showing a beloved regular), Barnette celebrates Black queer joy and her own family history. This sculpture is part of the artist's larger multimedia project honoring the bar, which came to the Walker in spring 2024. Catherine Opie US, b. 1961; lives and works in Los Angeles Norma & Eyenga, Minneapolis, Minnesota 1998 chromogenic print; ed. In the late 1990s, artist Catherine Opie embarked on a cross-country road trip, seeking to represent lesbian domestic life in the United States. Across 3,000 miles and nine cities, she photographed lesbian and queer couples, families, and friends, staging portraits of them in their homes and gardens. At the time she made these works, Opie was frustrated that traditional notions of the family left out the relationships that sustained her and her queer community. "A family doesn't have to be a mom and a dad and a kid," said Opie. "We build family and community in other ways, too."

Came back to find we have indeed grown Saffron. 🤗
Lavender petal crocus with Saffron threads. Bought these from Territorial Seeds and planted late last Fall, came up but did not bloom. It looks like the crocus on one side of bed is blooming earlier than other side. I have harvested the mature side before we get a lot of unneeded rain over this week.

Good evening. If you're traveling by car thru rural Iowa and looking for a place to eat, and want flavor, go Mexican because Iowa white people food has major seasoning issues.

We ate at Cielito Lindo last night, Lake View IA close to Blackhawk Lake. Very tasty & festive 😋

One of these days I'll tell you how that shot came about. Restaurant is colorfully decorated for Day of the Dead holiday and there are plenty of Mexican flags on the walls. The Mr. had carnitas and I had carne asada tacos. There was also the plates of beans and rice, chips and salsa, and something with cheese, which we shared, that the name escapes me.

Good afternoon. Sadly, we said goodbye to Minnesota yesterday and am in Iowa on stolen land of the Asakiwaki (Sauk) and Meskwaki (Fox) tribes. Spent last night at beautiful but stinky (it's feedlot manure spread on farms season) Blackhawk Lake.

The late NatGeo photographer Jim Brandenburg's Eagle Cloud. In his words: "I was visiting Luverne because of my father's passing a few days earlier. I found it comforting, during this time of grieving. to go to a place with such positive beauty that overlooked the farm that I grew up on. I imagined my father tending his fields. He would have glanced up and gazed upon the rocky ridge to the west, where I was standing the area we now call Touch the Sky. This image was captured there, on Touch the Sky Prairie, a part of the 808 acres of untilled tallgrass prairie that we have acquired for preservation through the Brandenburg Prairie Foundation. Our foundation had just learned of some adjacent property that had become available for purchase to extend our prairie. Across the proporty line, the native gayfeather flowers caught my attention. I decided that this particular patch of native wildflowers would make a wonderful addition to my upcoming prairie movie. This image became one of the final scenes of the two-year project. As I was filming close-ups of the flowers, I took my eye off the viewfinder and looked up into the sky. There it was an enormous cloud in the shape of an esgle sprending its wings. Startled, I hesitated and quickly decided that it would make a better vertical still image. I needed my camera. I put down my filming gear and rushed to grab my camera. I had just enough time to shoot 4 or 6 frames when the typical intense prairie wind blow it away. Within a minute, the eagle was gone but I had my record." Yesterday morning we visited the equinoctial rock alignment @ Blue Mounds State Park MN, 1,250 foot long row of rocks created by Native Americans centuries ago. The late Jim Brandenburg shot it way better.

Good evening. We are camping at Blue Mounds State Park MN, a park with buffalo. This is our second time here.

There's a path to Mound Creek. Accidently switched to selfie and missed a Great Blue Heron swooping down about 20 ft from me. 🤦‍♀️
