#Ma’amtagila
My heart is full after spending several days out on the land with members of the Ma’amtagila, as well as friends and supporters of theirs from all over the world.

Much love and solidarity to the Ma’amtagila and their territory ❤️🌲🌊

This is almost 40 hectares of recently logged old-growth forest on a ridge in Ma'amtagila territory, so-called northern Vancouver Island.

Despite promising to save these forests, BC's NDP government regularly permits their destruction.

There’s a petition to remove Gunn as candidate, signed by large number of current &former respectable counsellors, Chiefs, mayors etc FROM the riding.
Gunn made HORRIFIC, RACIST, FALSE remarks about 1st ppls &residential schools (so did PP🤬), but PP is standing by him.

All we need to know about PP🤬

This July, the Kwakwaka'wakw Revitalization Project (KRP) gathered to witness the Ma’amtagila Nation reawaken their sacred ancestral village site at Hiladi—“the place to make things right.”

This valley is called Tessium Creek, and it's one I've talked about a hundred times before -- the entire valley bottom has been smoked, and now BCTS (the provincial government's own logging company) is working its way up the less-productive ridges:

For #PhycologyFriday, here’s a big pebbly mudflat of rockweed (Fucus distichus) mixed with what I believe is yet-to-bud Glasswort (Salicornia) that I saw this week visiting Ma’amtagila territory in northern Vancouver Island. Both are common species, but this seemed like an unusual habitat/growth!

It's always important to put the logging industry's rhetoric about "access to fibre" in the proper context. In valley after valley all across BC, these corporations have done this: systematically taken almost all of the valuable trees.

Hase’ Collective’s Ax’nakwala begins with Forestorium, a new full-length, site-specific operatic performance addressing the primary forests of Vancouver Island and the challenges they face. It takes place within one of the few remaining old growth forest tracts located in Ma’amtagila territories.

Heading back out onto the backroads to connect with people and the land on Kwakwaka’wakw territories. I’ll be in and out of service, so I’ll likely catch ya next week 🌲✌🏼

These are new roads being built this month into an at-risk old growth forest the BC NDP government promised to protect. This is why the United For Old Growth Day of Action on Sept28 is necessary.

The best place to spend #InternationalDayOfForests is of course the forest, but a close second is in the Mungo Martin Bighouse with Kwakwaka’wakw leaders and members of the Awi’nakola—Tree of Life community 🌲❤️🌲
