Departing White House Counsel Held Powerful Sway By CHARLIE SAVAGE APRIL 6, 2014 WASHINGTON - When President Obama selected Kathryn Ruemmler to be White House counsel in June 2011, it was something of a surprise: As a younger, relatively obscure lawyer, and one with no personal ties to the president, she did not fit the mold of predecessors. But Ms. Ruemmler would go on to become the longest-serving counsel of Mr. Obama's presidency, wielding influence that has been "little understood but highly consequential," said Mr. Obama's chief of staff, Denis R. McDonough, the third top presidential aide with whom she has served. Ms. Ruemmler has told Mr. Obama that she will step down in mid-May, administration officials said. While she put off three previous departures at Mr. Obama's request, this time it is happening, they said: A finalist has been identified as her successor, though they would not say who until a background check was complete. The New York Times interviewed more than a dozen current and former officials to assess her tenure. "Kathy has become one of my most trusted advisers over the past few years," Mr. Obama said in a statement. "I deeply value her smarts, her judgment, and her wit — but most importantly her uncanny ability to see around the corners that nobody else anticipates." Examples of Ms. Ruemmler's influence are wide-ranging. When Mr. Obama was weighing whether to launch a punitive strike against Syria over claims it had used chemical weapons, officials said, Ms. Ruemmier advised him that he could lawfully do so but that it would be prudent to seek prior congressional authorization. Ms. Ruemmler was also the principal architect, officials said, of a strategy to overcome the reluctance of Senate Democrats to kill the filibuster rule: […] With the filibuster gone, Mr. Obama has reversed his previously lagging record on appointments, transforming the circuit and catching up to President George W. Bush's pace. And Ms. Ruemmler took a hard line in internal debates about keeping executive branch documents secret, like memos from the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel sought by congressional overseers, or in Freedom of Information Act lawsuits. Her arguments—that disclosing them would chill candid advice to presidents—have contributed to Mr. Obama's transition from promising. greater transparency to being criticized even by his own allies for excessive secrecy. "The thing that strikes me that she takes a particular interest in is the absolute need for defending the president's equities—obviously for this president, but for the institution and the next president, too—to protect the space of the president to get candid advice to make tough decisions," Mr. McDonough said. "She's not afraid to take on a lot of criticism for that." Her supporters and critics alike agree that Ms. Ruemmler has not pursued any policy agenda, instead limiting her role to analyzing for Mr. Obama what options would be legal and what risks they entailed. "She always tells him exactly what she thinks, and her only worry is to protect the president's equities," said Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew, a former chief of staff to Mr. Obama. "She doesn't consider herself to be an advocate. She doesn't make policy arguments." That was a different model than Gregory B. Craig's, Mr. Obama's first White House counsel. He pushed to close the Guantánamo Bay prison and to disclose Bush-era memos about torture, but resigned in Dec 2009 after clashing with Mr. Obama's first chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel. While she was employed as a partner at Latham and Watkins, Ruemmler met with Jeffrey Epstein on dozens of occasions including lunches and dinners between her time in the White House and her subsequent hiring at Goldman Sachs, according to his schedule, The Wall Street Journal reported. She was also on his schedule for a flight to Paris in 2015, as well as a stop at his home in the U.S. Virgin Islands in 2017; she said these trips did not take place and The Wall Street Journal could not confirm that they or other meetings ultimately happened. She said: "I regret ever knowing Jeffrey Epstein." Ruemmler was listed as a backup executor in a January 2019 version of Jeffrey Epstein's will, a disclosure from Congress showed on September 8, 2025. 13) In November 2025, emails released by the House Oversight Committee revealed that she was in frequent email correspondence with Epstein.

The Last Leg Goes Down Under was a 2 part off shoot of The Last Leg. It was shown on Channel 4 on 29 January and 5 February 2016. Hosted by Adam Hills, Alex Brooker and Josh Widdecombe. How will Josh and Alex survive in Australia? Guests on the shows were Amar Latif, Russ McDonough, Ian Smith, Chris Tangey, Chris Wallace, George Aslamatzis, AJ Bartley, Jacqueline Hyde, Adrian Bennett, Linda Bennett, Chris Tobin and Kevin Bloody Wilson. An Open Mike production for Channel 4. Wild at Heart was a drama series broadcast on ITV from 29 January 2006 to 30 December 2012. 7 series totalling 65 episodes were made plus a finale special. The Trevanion family are from Bristol. The Dad has an abandoned vervet monkey brought into his veterinary surgery. His wife Sarah suggests a holiday to Africa to rehabilitate it. Arriving at Leopards Den, they meet Anders Du Plessis whose family has owned the property for over 100 years. He persuades them to stay and enter into a partnership to restore the property as a game reserve for wild animals. The cast includes Stephen Tompkinson, Amanda Holden, Deon Stewardson, Nomsa Xaba, Lucy-Jo Hudson, Luke Ward-Wilkinson, Rafaella Hutchinson, Olivia Scott-Taylor, Hayley Mills, Thapelo Mokoena, Martinus Van Der Berg, Jessie Wallace, Dawn Steele, Megan Martell, Tarryn Faye Brummage, Juliet Mills, Cal MacAnich, Mary Anne Barlow, Atandwa Kani, David Butler, Robert Bathurst and Jill Halfpenny. A Company Pictures and STV production for ITV. Lewis is a drama that continued on from where Inspector Morse ended. ITV broadcast a pilot episode on 29 January 2006. This was successful and the series began from 18 February 2007 to 10 November 2015. 9 series totalling 41 episodes were made in addition to the pilot. Robert Lewis, who was Morse's sergeant in the original series, has now been promoted to detective inspector after a break to mourn his wife's passing. Lewis is now assisted by DS James Hathaway, forensic pathologist Dr. Laura Hobson, and DS Lizzie Maddox. The cast includes Kevin Whately, (REDACTED), Clare Holman, Angela Griffin, Rebecca Front and Steve Toussaint.
