I asked the White House if the president was talking about used cooking oil, and they haven't answered. (Trump often gets ahead of his comms staff.) But UCO imports from China—used for biofuel—hit a record last year, prompting some domestic complaints. Brooke Rollins was talking about it midyear.

Of major note is how less frequently Trump is having his pointless midyear rallies. The base needs some sort of entertainment and it's all consolidated to Twitter now. It's not like any of them read the actual news. Caroline Leavitt tweets are their Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert.

Inflation is running hot. It doesn't look that way because the absolute level of inflation is still low. But that masks a more worrying reality. The middle of the year tends to see low inflation, before it picks up at the end of the year. In 2025, the pick-up in inflation is already happening now...

The Shire Reckoning (the calendar the hobbits used) is excellently constructed with 12 months each having 30 days for a nice, even 360 day calendar. To keep the maths mathing, 5 "intercalary" days are added at the end of the year (Yule) and midyear (Lithe).

It’s a tale as old as time, so I won’t dwell on the specifics, except to say that this kid, who had loved math and had a talent for it ended up hating and fearing math and became convinced he was clearly no good at it.
It was heartbreaking, and part of why we pulled him out midyear.
