Tear gas refers to the entire category of lachrymatory agents, not to any specific chemical. OC gas is a form of tear gas. See e.g., this from the Oregon Dept. of Environmental Quality.

This would be like saying "they clarified that they beat the baby with a tonfa, not a baton."

District Judge Sara Ellis' injunction order limits how and when feds can use gas in the Chicago area.

ahead of the 2024 dnc, the chicago office of inspector general today released a follow-up to its 2021 report on cpd's response to uprisings against police violence in 2020. the oig specifically calls out chicago police's crowd control and mass arrest policies.

Oleoresin capsicum (OC) gas and spray has both an immediate effect and an ongoing effect. The inhaled effects are very strong and unpleasant, but they subside in a fairly short time — 2-10 minutes. The ongoing effects can last for days, and the cumulative impact on a person can be disabling.

I looked it up, and the paprika extract they're using (oleoresin paprika) is very close to flavorless. It's added for color.

Oleoresin capsaicin, OTOH, will add actual heat.

I'd never heard of either ingredient before, so the research was fun. 100% new information!
