effect then say coughing to clear your lungs / throat. I have had days when I'm just coughing / can't breathe right all day long and using overtone I can give my lungs and abdomen muscles a break from coughing. It's another technique that has its place but isn't magic or anything.

exists it's why sound behaves the way it does in solids in that it travels faster through denser materials. When I'm feeling congested or having trouble breathing I start overtone singing. I can feel the vibrations in my chest, and I think the fact phonons have negative mass results in a different

Overtone is different and it's because of the properties of phonons in a solid. Phonons which are basically quasiparticles that move heat / sound around in a solid have this strange sort of negative mass. This isn't a resting mass but only exists while the phonon

even people who are trying to do something good, you’re still going to get a few assholes, and there’s a real overtone of paternalism, and a toxic “only I can solve it” mentality. They love to give to charity, but don’t love to see their workplace get unionized! Especially if they’re the boss!

There are also many different styles all over the world. It's fascinating to me both personally and in terms of the unexplored possibility space this could create for artists now. I have felt the vibration from the overtone in different parts of my body except my legs.

doing things like increasing lung capacity, or returning a sense of control over the situation. I know what I have experienced with overtone singing but I also know that's not evidence based at this point since it's just me as far as I know.

I'm a classically trained vocalist.
Unfortunately, overtone singing is useless in an asthma flare-up.

I think the first work that really showed me the power of the overtone series was Georg Friedrich Haas's String Quartet No. 9. Its use of microtones is so precise that at times, you can hear little "tears" in the fabric of the sound from waves in the chords cancelling each other out.

I know I said only two things, but I also found a form of respiratory therapy that anyone can do for free with a little practice. Overtone singing seems to help break up congestion in the lungs. I got into it to deal with anxiety but it seems to help physically as well.

Eww, that yellowed overtone really resembles what tobacco smoke does to everything it lands on. Meanwhile, "heroin chic" 2 decades later looked like people caught in flagrante delicto by a private detective wielding a Polaroid camera with an overblown flash.

The Ainu instrument “Mukkuri” is a bamboo mouth harp with unique overtone sounds like “biyoon” and “boyoon.”
With no fixed notes, players shape wind- or animal-like tones using breath and the mouth. Today it’s loved as a healing instrument for relaxation and meditation 🌿

In Swords Without Master, the GM role is the Overplayer. I love it.
⚔️ It echoes the word "overlord" which is among the top 5 all time nemesis-code sword & sorcery titles.
🔔 It means I can call the Overplayer's tone the Overtone, which is pretty fucking sweet.
🧙 The word "player" is right in there.

Also, been meaning to get this off my chest for a long time: It's problematic that "Hurdy Gurdy Man" doesn't actually feature any hurdy-gurdy.

I don't actually know if it's generated, but I think it's nearly certain that it is, given its frequency and the degree to which it sticks out aesthetically as generic pop with a kitsch dark overtone, allowing me to not be put off, as I am with normal pop.

So in the overtone series, you have the fundamental, being the note being played/heard. Above that note, you have partials, starting with the octave above, then the fifth above that, fourth above that (another octave), perfect major third, perfect minor third, and then into smaller intervals.

This CBC "article" fucking sucks shit.

It leads with the perspective from fucking Nazis that empathy is bad and offers little to no pushback on it, just a milquetoast counterpoint of "but these other folks say empathy is necessary" with an underwhelming overtone of "who's to say who's right here?"
“But a growing chorus of mostly conservative writers, pods/influencers, mainly in the US but also in CAN, argue empathy is too easily manipulated. They say it’s being hijacked by progressives to justify equity, diversity, abortion, immigration & other progressive causes.”
