This isn't a real choice. Venezuela is run by PSUV elites. Delcy might be acceptable to them, giving her a chance of building a stable repressive government. Machado is unacceptable and can survive only in a liberal democracy. That requires US boots on the ground, which Trump won't provide.

Speaking Wednesday night on Con el Mazo Dando, a weekly television program closely tied to Venezuela’s governing and security leadership, Cabello said the Jan. 3 attack was “an inhuman act” that left “a wave of terror among our people, among our children, who heard everything.” He rejected claims that only military targets were struck, saying U.S. bombings hit residential areas and killed civilians. “Many were killed by the bombing,” he said. What we are witnessing is not regime change but regime capture. The FANB’s immediate recognition of Delcy Rodríguez, the demobilisation orders, the “tense calm” in Caracas: none of this is consistent with a state resisting foreign aggression. It is consistent with a negotiated handover in which significant elements of the Chavista apparatus concluded that their institutional survival was better served by collaboration than resistance. The 4.5 million militia members, we now learn, were a “semantic construction.” The revolutionary rhetoric was theatre. When the moment came, the Bolivarian bourgeoisie chose exactly as every national bourgeoisie in the semi-colonial world has chosen when faced with the armed power of imperialism: accommodation on the best available terms.
