This is about British Labour but the phenomenon of "government in severe trouble starts doing crazy stuff which will just lose them votes for the hell of it" seems to be happening in New Zealand as well
Do they really believe all the racist shit and removing juries will make them more popular? reminds me of the debate going on in the Dem party now, where some dem politicians don’t actually want their party’s current coalition or voters. The problem is these actions don’t even create a new coalition

SARS-CoV-2 is not “airborne HIV” and I will not permit this narrative on my feed.

It’s an irresponsible and harmful claim made by people who understand nothing about viruses.

I think a more precise formulation of what is required is "Don't NOT listen to women" (or other oppressed group)
I feel like the "Listen to women" line became widespread during Me Too. In that context it makes sense: these women's testimony was evidence of abuses but getting written off or discredited. But the testimony here is... Stancil argued with people online?

Ha ha ha Luxon is fucked
Every global election being an anti-incumbent wave because social media refuses to allow good news is an underrated outcome.
boy there seems to be a bottomless appetite for dogmatic economic pessimism on video platforms. clicked on one of those during the morning Zwift and now my youtube feed is WE'RE DOOMED re the stock market, jobs, car market, inflation, AI on and on

Economic pessimism is political optimism. In the popular imagination, everything crashing might be the only way to stop *gestures vaguely* all this. It's like Giant Meteor posting, and honestly I think a lot of us are sincere about that

edition.cnn.com/2025/11/25/s... A story that I’ve been working on for the past few months, about why women’s football is so important to queer people, is published! I really loved writing this and it’s a story that’s very close to my heart. I would love it if you kind folks would give it a read 🤍

part of what I like about Mamdani is his admission that housing affordability is a more complex problem than either building more housing or expanding rent control. You need to do both in order to protect the most vulnerable now and improve the problem long term.

Gavin Newsom is bad and you should feel bad about even considering him as a presidential candidate
"Straight men aren’t looking for Democrats to cosplay as their drinking buddies: They’re looking for leaders who can speak plainly about the pressures and problems men face today and offer solutions."
Why Are Democrats Teasing Homophobia in New Attacks on MAGA?
The strategy demeans an important constituency of the party without providing an obvious political gain.

I am reminded of how Rick Wakeman, infamously Tory prog-rock guy, got in shit with his US fanbase when he played Cuba and defended that country on the basis of national sovereignty/"Yanqui go home". But right-wing nationalists actually have more in common with Stalinists than neoliberals...
Trevor Phillips proposes banning "remittances" (ie: imposing currency/exchange controls on international cash transfers by foreign nationals from Britain). He says this would disincentivise immigration, in a Times piece saying the Home Secretary needs to go [much] further

Can I just point out that modern "anticapitalists" really have to read Lenin and Trotsky in the early days of the Revolution. Lenin is talking about communism as MORE Taylorism, FASTER industrialisation, a Central Bank as the model for a bureaucracy which makes Line Go Up *faster* than capitalism
I've spoken before about how many so-called "anti-capitalists" are actually just Against The Modern World (feudal nostalgists or even primitivists); but some look at the Stalinist model of "we pretend to work, they pretend to pay us" and think that was a FEATURE rather than a bug
“Capitalism forces you to wake up at 7am against your body’s natural rhythms” no that’s Taylorism and if you don’t like living in a society that coordinates effort to ensure a better outcome for all then I don’t think you’ll love the alternatives

The Spanish Republic, another clear victory for purging the annoying radicals
As we all know, the center siding with the forces of order over the forces of revolution always results in the victory of the center. The Second French Republic, Frankfurt, Weimar Germany, Madero's Mexico, they all continued forever, right?

If I'm elected the Leftist leader of a small European country in 1936, you're damn right I'm going to meet Hitler if I have the chance, to suss him out
If you have a deadly enemy that you're not currently prepared to go to war with, that's a very good reason for meeting with them.

There is of course the Mighty Boosh episode where Noel Fielding gets marooned on a desert island for giving a ship's captain a mullet and honestly that's too lenient
I asked my barber why he has a much higher price for mullets on his board than any other cut. He answered, “Because I hate them.”

Those were years when Things Were Possible. The years of the Arab Spring and Occupy were something similar.

A few things are starting to become possible again.
The 1980s ended in mid-1988, and the 1990s didn’t start until 1992. The time in between is a magical liminal space. I’m actually very serious about this.

I should start posting more about NZ politics on here, because if more foreigners hear about (for example) Winston Peters, Ray Chung and Brian Tamaki, they'll stop with that cloying stuff about "progressive little sleepy hobbit country"
The abuse Julie Fairey copped after being HIT BY A CAR is exactly what happens when we treat online harm as background noise. Women in politics bear the brunt, especially women of colour. Until NZ actually regulates platforms properly, this will keep happening #nzpol
