Jafar Panahi and his legal team will begin their legal appeal on January 4 against the one year prison sentence and two-year travel ban the filmmaker was handed by the Tehran Islamic Revolutionary Court.  In a post on X, Panahi’s attorney, Mostafa Nili, said: “After appealing against the one-year prison sentence for propaganda activities against the regime of Mr. Jafar Panahi, Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court has set the hearing date for January 4, 2026.”

If I had to pick my absolute favorite, like everyone else on the internet I would say One Battle After Another. It Was Just An Accident and Marty Supreme both would be close runners-up. A Note: Die My Love, Is This Thing On?, No Other Choice, Sorry Baby, and The Testament Of Ann Lee are all major 2025 film releases I still have not seen, and thus couldn’t include.

IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT
I spent a lot of this year thinking about the various threats facing cinema lately. Theatrical contraction. Studio mergers. A growing premium on proven IP. Fractured attention spans. Film financing crises, “the worst I’ve ever seen” according to more than one producer friend. The growing specter of AI. Etc etc. And then I see movies like this, whose director Jafar Panahi has been jailed multiple times, who has been banned from making films in his home country, and who literally risked his freedom just to make this movie. Because he needed to make it. Because he had a story to tell and a point to make, he hired a largely inexperienced cast and a small crew and filmed this whole movie in secret. And he didn’t just succeed in making any movie, he made a compelling and entertaining movie whose final sequence is among the most powerful I’ve seen all year. Above all that, there are several explicitly antifascist movies on this list but this is the only one to truly be in direct conflict with fascists. I look at Jafar Panahi and I think, you know what, movies are going to be okay.

La Palme d’Or 2025 est un film aux multiples facettes, à la fois film à suspense, comédie de pieds nickelés et manifeste sur la violence politique et ses conséquences. Les contraintes de mise en scène (clandestine) de Jafar Panahi sont brillamment contournées et sublimées.

La prison a fait bouger Panahi. Laissant de côté son art délicat de l'ellipse et sa virtuosité austère, il aborde son sujet politique de façon plus frontale, didactique (c'est le défaut) et rageuse (la fin, sidérante). L'emploi de la comédie de situation pour une histoire si grave est admirable.

Cabe aclarar que Jafar Panahi ya había hecho una de mis películas favoritas con This Is not a filme. No sé si este filme está a ese nivel, Pero si has vivido en dictadura, te llega con sus preguntas crudas de si se puede sanar o no tras vivir en opresion.

Primer filme que veo en el año: Fue Solo un Accidente de Jafar Panahi. Es un filme directo y a la vez complejo sobre autoritarismo, el perdón y la justicia. Elementos de drama, comedia negra, suspenso y hasta diría que Horror. Excelente filme, no lo quiero volver a ver.
