“The #1 movie when you were 10 years old is how your 2026 is going to ”

Movies hadn’t been invented yet when I was ten but this phenakistoscope was pretty popular:

Bangkok's oriental exoticism switched to Hong Kong but sequel's basically the same film as the first. Certain bits haven't aged well and can actually be triggering to some. But it'll titillate enough just like the first #Emmanuelle. #EmmanuelleLAntivierge #Emmanuelle2 #EmmanuelleTheJoysOfAWoman 📽️🎞️

Bi Gan’s Dream Factory | The New Yorker
Every night during the shoot, Bi and his assistant directors convened in a conference room, where they and assorted crew members discussed everything from research on opium production to the optimal speed for a spinning phenakistoscope, an early animation device. As each night progressed, ashtrays piled up and bags of betel nuts emptied; every once in a while, Bi’s assistant passed him a glass of milk for nutrition.

I'm with you there. I also only watch films on phenakistoscope. Who has need for all these new-fangled gadgets like the zoetrope? Not me, that's for sure. 🤪

Jenny and I visited the ACMI museum in Melbourne last year, it was incredible! We learned about phenakistoscope discs there, and it inspired this day-to-night transition in Dance of Theseus. #indiegamedev #art #animation

Rad, I appreciate you.

But TTRPGs aren't even that far along. We don't even have metaphorical photography or film made, and we're not even to the zoetrope yet. We might not even be to the fucking phenakistoscope yet.

I'd argue ttrpgs are still debating over paints and fucking canvas.

See this phenakistoscope card for an example of this style in pre-cinema:
a circular drawing of a man 's faces with mouths open
Alt: hallucinatory phenakistoscope slide

If you've already gone through Ryukishi's works, and still want a strong dose of tragedy and horror, look no further. This is genuinely one of the best visual novels ever written. I have to warn you, though, it WILL break you. And it will also make you want to research how to make a phenakistoscope.

I had to make a phenakistoscope, And my teacher was really into deeper meaning, so I took what I wanted to do: cute animals and added an ominous arm, to make it seem deeper. And I had to make a creepy audio to go with it. Take whatever meaning you want from it, I got an A+

The phenakistiscope (also known by the spellings phénakisticope or phenakistoscope) was the first widespread animation device that created a fluid illusion of motion.

(I also have a forthcoming article on the connection between pantomime cartoons (precursor to comics) and the phenakistoscope, the earliest motion picture technology.)

line them up on a rotating disk like a phenakistoscope. It'll look like a dolphin trying to jump

The graduation exhibition has ended and my thesis work, a larger phenakistoscope inspired animation apparatus "Liikuteltavaa kuvaa, osa I" (Movable picture, part I) moved to it's new home.
