#SUKIYAKI
If you want your home to smell like the coziest place on the planet, have sukiyaki hot pot for dinner . You can get the soup bases on line or at Asian markets and a portable induction top is handy. It's like being wrapped in a thick blanket on a chilly night

Pt 2, Ch 1 + Ch 2 (they kind of go hand-in-hand as their own mini-part 1 and 2):
-Setting up the conflict - Emi's stress
-"Sukiyaki Night"
-Emi's post about the visit, which also helped set up the conflict ("since last month")

I see we're sharing foreign Sukiyaki covers. youtu.be/ncXy7hCeJQA?...

Fun fact, Orquesta de la Luz is 100% Japanese but sings in Spanish. The rest of the people involved with the song are Peruvian, though.

Music has never required English to be American.LaBamba,Macarena,Sukiyaki, de massive U.S. hits.
Opera is in Italian.
Church hymns were in Latin.
No one needed translation to feel them. Music is universal.
Culture isn’t a threat.
It’s presence. 🇺🇸🌎

Also ‘Sukiyaki’ (totally in Japanese) and ‘Dominique’ (in French) both number ones in America.

La Bamba, Macarena, Sukiyaki, Frerer Jacques, Hava Nagila:

Just a few examples of songs that people like without understanding the words!

Dumbasses 🤣

And just for fun, here's one of my favorite cover bands, Big Daddy, covering "Sukiyaki" in the style of The Beach Boys!

Eres Tu, top 10 in the US in 1973. Sukiyaki, #1 in the US in 1961. Macarena, charted in the top 25 in 1993 (a later version hit #1). La Bamba, top 40 in 1958 and #1 in 1987.
None of these songs are English.
Music is identifiable in any language.
These white magas need schooling. And NOT at home.

How can Americans live with so many Spanish speaking people and not pick up *any*? I know a little Spanish because I loved, "Eres Tu" by Mocedades. I wanted to know what she was saying. Same reason I picked up some Japanese, for "Ue O Muite Aruko" (named 'Sukiyaki' in the US), by Kyu Sakamoto.

This country has a long history of non-English songs (many in Spanish) achieving widespread popularity, including “Volare,” “Gangnam Style,” “Rock Me Amadeus,” “Feliz Navidad,” “Dominique,” “Sukiyaki,” “Guantanamera,” “La Bamba” “99 Luftballons” plus the bilingual “Rico Suave” & “The Ketchup Song.”

Janice-Marie Johnson of "A Taste of Honey" wrote the English lyrics to "Sukiyaki" for their cover, but the original writer would not let her take any credit (or the royalties that would go along with it.)

She is also one of the most underrated bassists around.

My favorite album (I got at a thrift store for 25¢) is Kyu Sakamoto's "Sukiyaki". I sing along with every song (phonetically and wrong) in Japanese. His version of Jimmy Jones' Good Timin' (also in Japanese) is very fun.

Wait til they learn about the Japanese language 1963 number one hit, “Sukiyaki”.

Always cracks me up that people call it The Sukiyaki Song! 😂
February 9, 2026 at 10:18 PM
Thinking about some playing some classic (to me) music: 99 Luftballons, Rock Me Amadeus, La Bamba, Macarena, Gangnam Style, Sukiyaki, Despacito, Oye Como Va,The Girl From Ipanema, Der Kommissar. What am I missing? 😜

Truly. And all the youngsters these days (*shaking my cane in aggravation*) forget that most classical music has NO words, or in the 60s in the US top songs included "Sukiyaki," "Dominique," "La Bamba," etc., none in English
