(Related gripe: Small retail businesses that cater to hobbyists and are onlyopen 10-6 Tue-Fri and 12-4 Sat. I get that Fred rolled his pennies as a welder or machinist to open the gun/game/model railroad store as a semiretirement gig, but those hours are just catering to the unemployed.)

“Semiretirement” means you’ve retired but you have a part-time job of some sort. What they are talking about is unpaid vacation. They’re just being cute with words to disguise the fact that they want to no longer pay people for time off and we shouldn’t play along.

The fact the brace was always there is what I'm drawing attention to when I say he was pushing his body past its limits. Now he's in semiretirement, adopting a more relaxed state (both mentally and physically) and loosening his body. It could be the passage of time, but I think it's a bit more too.
