This was a truly collaborative effort spanning multiple labs and institutions….many hands picking the Asgard fruit. Recognising Indigenous knowledge and culture from #SharkBay in the naming of novel organism. Brief summary and shout out to @scarlettlw.bsky.social for some cool stromatolite art...

Only a few #dolphins in #SharkBay use #sponges when hunting. A new acoustic modeling study may explain why this isn't more common

"Given distortions vary with each sponge, dolphins must adaptively and flexibly compensate...This explains why sponging takes so long to learn..."
Some of the #Tursiops #dolphins in #SharkBay, #Australia put basket #sponges on their rostrums, reducing abrasion when hunting buried prey.

A new study finds side effects; i.e. "...that acoustic properties of the echolocation signal are changed...'

Pausing to listen;

Good morning from Shark Bay down under on the coast of WA. Managed luckily to snap a photo of a Pelican who'd just caught a fish - it disappeared very quickly down it's beak.🥱😷🥸

FanTAStic.

In 2023 I travelled to #HamelinPool6532 #SharkBay #WesternAustralia to see the stromatolites. They were there but the gov hadn’t repaired the storm-wrecked, protective board walk for years. Have they done it yet or these ancient life forms still at risk?

🌿 Did you know WA’s southernmost mangroves in Bunbury are 900km from their nearest mainland neighbour?

Second massive marine heatwave since 2011 off the west coast of #Australia. The last one had devastating impact on ecosystem & fisheries around the Gasgoyne area. There have been little one too. Yet WA folk of all persuasions are pro natural (hmm …methane) gas exploitation🤦‍♀️ #ningaloo #sharkbay
A marine heatwave in northwest Australia is killing huge numbers of fish. It’s heading south
In 2010, an enormous marine heatwave devastated ocean life in Western Australia. Now another big one is taking hold – and heading towards Ningaloo.
