I don't think many people in the US, but also Europe, realize the degree to which Brussels has since 2020 quietly built a proto-state apparatus that now enables it to react to a crisis in real time rather than EU time.

It's still ad hoc and potential, held together by duct tape. But it's now there.
We will always protect our strategic economic and security interests.

We will face these challenges to our European solidarity with steadiness and resolve.
